The reality of global warming brings along an increase in environmental aware-ness. In recent years, this awareness has shifted public focus on electric vehicles. For a large group of people greenhouse gas emission is attributed to internal combustion engines. However, some challenges have arisen for electric vehicles. Limited range due to immature battery technologies and insufficient fast charging technologies that do not meet end user expectations are some major obstacles to overcome. Eventual-ly this situation negatively affects the sales and the wide use of electric vehicles. That is the reason why studies on wired and wireless charging systems play an important role in improving the sales performance of electric vehicles. In this study a thorough review of worldwide electric vehicle charging systems is conducted and discussed in the framework of the electric vehicles, charging stations, installations, and implemen-tation of standards in Turkey. The distribution of charging stations in Turkey are analyzed with respect to location, region, type, infrastructure requirements and future projections. The historical development of charging technologies, modes and charge levels have been studied in detail. As highlight of this study, wireless charging tech-nologies were also discussed and the historical development process was analyzed along with related standards. The current state of electric vehicle sector and charging stations in Turkey are discussed and provided with up to date information.

Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (DWPT) has high potential to overcome electric vehicles’ battery issues of size and range and to achieve fully autonomous driving. Accurately extracting the self- and mutual-inductance of the coils is essential for controlling and optimizing the overall performance of the DWPT system under real driving conditions. Due to the limited space for coil installation at the bottom of the vehicles, multi-turn, multi-layer square coils are proposed to maximize the space utilization of the DWPT system. For the first time, this paper presents a theoretical model for calculating the self- and mutual-inductance and the coupling coefficients of multi-turn, multi-layer square coils. Taking a four-turn, four-layer square coil as an example, the model is cross-validated by 3D coil modelling and simulation, as well as practical measurements. A theoretical–experimental verification is further conducted to indirectly corroborate the cross-validated coupling coefficients of the two coils. On average, the normalized root mean square errors of the resultant self-inductance and coupling coefficients of two identical coils are 1.04% and 4.29%, respectively. Specifically, for the selected case, normalized root mean square errors of the zero-phase angle frequencies of the system under different misalignment situations average out at 1.32%.

Wireless charging technologies have emerged as a promising solution for electric vehicle (EV) charging, offering convenience and automation. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the three key wireless charging technologies: inductive, capacitive, and magnetic gear. For inductive and capacitive technologies, the working principle, architectures, topologies, advantages, and challenges are discussed and analyzed considering both stationary and dynamic modes of operation. In addition, the paper introduces and analyzes the concept of mixed wireless power transfer, which combines inductive and capacitive charging systems. Additionally, the study explores the magnetic gear wireless power transfer technology, which leverages the interaction between synchronous permanent magnets to transmit power wirelessly. Various research and development efforts related to these technologies are reviewed considering academia, research labs and industry. A comparative analysis among different technologies is presented, considering key performance metrics such as power transfer, efficiency, cost, and operating frequency was presented. This review paper serves as a comprehensive resource for researchers, engineers, and industry professionals interested in wireless charging technologies for EV charging. It highlights the advancements, trade‐offs, and potential synergies among inductive, capacitive, and magnetic gear systems, paving the way for the widespread adoption of wireless charging and the development of self‐charging and self‐driving EVs.
