4×–2× Potato Clones with Resistance or Susceptibility to Internal Heat Necrosis Differ in Tuber Mineral Status

Abstract: Internal heat necrosis (IHN) is a physiological disorder resulting in necrotic tissue in the pith of potato (Solanum spp.) tubers. Susceptibility is associated with localized Ca deficiency within the tuber, but Ca availability may be influenced by other nutrients. Studies in Virginia, North Carolina, and New Jersey in 2001 and 2002 determined the influence of soil‐applied Ca on tuber yield, specific gravity (SG), IHN, and nutrient concentration. Furrow‐applied Ca sulfate (448 kg ha−1 Ca) was applied to IHN res… Show more

“…The mineral composition of both tuber flesh and peel varied widely between locations, which is consistent with previously published data showing that potatoes of the same cultivar grown at different locations contain varying levels of minerals (True et al 1978;Krištůfek et al 2000;Rivero et al 2003;Sterrett et al 2006). Many of these differences in tissue mineral content are reflected in the levels of soil minerals at each location.…”

“…For example, apples are immersed in a calcium solution to maintain firmness in shipping and prolong shelf life (23). Calcium also is added to soil to reduce the incidences of pathogen attack on potato tubers (24) and to combat heat stress (25,26). All of these measures require the application of calciumcontaining solutions to the soil or fruits.…”

“…Losses have continued. In 2004, 12% of total potato acreage in Virginia and 1-15% of total potato acreage in North Carolina was lost to IHN (Sterrett et al 2006). Despite a slight reduction in acreage of Atlantic due to IHN susceptibility, its beneficial processing qualities have resulted in its persistence (Henninger et al 2000).…”

“…A recent study by Sterrett et al (2006) analyzed the effects of Ca and nine other nutrients (P, K, Mg, S, Na, Zn, Mn, Cu, and Fe) on IHN incidence and severity, specific gravity (SG), and yield. The experiment was performed over six locationyears, using Atlantic and 18 interspecific breeding lines (Solanum tuberosum×phureja-stenotomum).…”
