3D micro-CT analysis of void formations and push-out bonding strength of resin cements used for fiber post cementation

Abstract: PURPOSETo investigate the void parameters within the resin cements used for fiber post cementation by micro-CT (µCT) and regional push-out bonding strength.MATERIALS AND METHODSTwenty-one, single and round shaped roots were enlarged with a low-speed drill following by endodontic treatment. The roots were divided into three groups (n=7) and fiber posts were cemented with Maxcem Elite, Multilink N and Superbond C&B resin cements. Specimens were scanned using µCT scanner at resolution of 13.7 µm. The number, area… Show more

“…The clinician and the compaction of composites in cavities here plays a critical role. Uzun and co-workers 45 also observed a similar feature in the cements tested at the apical third of the tooth structure. Voids can behave as initiation points for fracture and crack propagation, so reducing mechanical strength and wear resistance especially when located at the surface of the material.…”

“…High-resolution micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) can measure the volume of three-dimensional shapes such as canals and gaps, analyzing the resin cement thickness and the voids presence around post materials (18). This methodology has been proved to be a powerful non-destructive 3D analysis, rapid, and powerful tool for visualizing the void parameters, the resin matrix, the internal structure and mechanical properties overcoming the limitations of the conventional methods (5,6,(19)(20)(21)(22)(23).…”

“…Laboratory research has found that post cementation with self‐adhesive resins has a larger number of voids in the cervical third of the root canal as compared with the middle or apical thirds (Uzun et al . , Pedreira et al . ).…”
