Nano-CT as tool for characterization of dental resin composites

Abstract: Technological advances have made it possible to examine dental resin composites using 3D nanometer resolution. This investigation aims to characterize existing dental nano-hybrid and micro-hybrid resin composites through comparing and contrasting nano-computed tomography (nano-CT) with micro-CT and high-resolution SEM images. Eight commercially available and widely used dental resin composites, 2 micro-hybrid and 6 nano-hybrid were researched. Cured samples were examined and characterized using nano-CT (resolu… Show more

“…It performs scans with a nanometer-scale resolution and therefore yields images of greater detail. It is also evident that nano-CT provides better 3D spatial visualization than conventional micro-CT, SEM, or AFM methods [ 139 ]. It offers insights into the morphology (e.g., crystallinity and porosity) of bioactive materials prepared under different conditions [ 140 , 141 , 142 ] and can be used to evaluate bone growth after implantation, similarly to micro-CT examinations.…”

“…One of the most important applications of nano CT is the 3D visualization of the dental tissues and subsequent spatial analyses, both descriptive and quantitative. 16 Nano Drug Delivery systems Oral infections are very complex diseases, thus requiring antimicrobial nano drug delivery systems to combat the same which aid in sitespecific wound healing.…”

“…3D representative images were obtained using CTVox 3D visualization software (Brüker). Linear measurements were not made using this software as Brüker's 3D visualization software solely offers 3D model creation, viewing and flexible control of Micro-CT scans (52)(53)(54).…”
