Preparing Biosurfactant Glucolipids from Crude Sophorolipids via Chemical Modifications and Their Potential Application in the Food Industry

This investigation developed a novel strategy for efficiently preparing glucolipids (GLs) by chemically modifying crude sophorolipids. Running this strategy, crude sophorolipids were effectively transformed into GLs through deglycosylation and de-esterification, with a yield of 54.1%. The acquired GLs were then purified via stepwise extractions, and 66.2% of GLs with 95% purity was recovered. GLs are more hydrophobic and present a stronger surface activity than acidic sophorolipids (ASLs). More importantly, these GLs displayed a superior antimicrobial activity to that of ASLs against the tested Gram-positive food pathogens, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 32–64 mg/L, except against E. coli . This activity of GLs is pH-dependent and especially more powerful under acidic conditions. The mechanism involved is possibly associated with the more efficient adsorption of GLs, as demonstrated by the hydrophobicity of the cell membrane. These GLs could be used as antimicrobial agents for food preservation and health in the food industry.

Synthetic oil spill dispersants have become essential in offshore oil spill response strategies. However, their use raises significant concerns regarding toxicity to phyto-and zooplankton and other marine organisms, especially in isolated and vulnerable areas such as the Arctic and shorelines. Sustainable alternatives may be developed by replacing the major active components of commercial dispersants with their natural counterparts. During this study, interfacial properties of different types of glycolipid-based biosurfactants (rhamnolipids, mannosylerythritol lipids, and trehalose lipids) were explored in a crude oil−seawater system. The best-performing biosurfactant was further mixed with different nontoxic components of Corexit 9500A, and the interfacial properties of the most promising dispersant blend were further explored with various types of crude oils, weathered oil, bunker, and diesel fuel in natural seawater. Our findings indicate that the most efficient dispersant formulation was achieved when mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs) were mixed with Tween 80 (T). The MELs−T dispersant blend significantly reduced the interfacial tension (IFT) of various crude oils in seawater with results comparable to those obtained with Corexit 9500A. Importantly, no leaching or desorption of MELs−T components from the crude oil−water interface was observed. Furthermore, for weathered and more viscous asphaltenic bunker fuel oil, IFT results with the MELs−T dispersant blend surpassed those obtained with Corexit 9500A. This dispersant blend also demonstrated effectiveness at different dosages (dispersant-to-oil ratio (DOR)) and under various temperature conditions. The efficacy of the MELs−T dispersant was further confirmed by standard baffled flask tests (BFTs) and Mackay−Nadeau−Steelman (MNS) tests. Overall, our study provides promising data for the development of effective biobased dispersants, particularly in the context of petroleum exploitation in subsea resources and transportation in the Arctic.

Cosmetic and personal care products including toothpaste, shampoo, creams, makeup, among others, are usually formulated with petroleum-based surfactants, although in the last years the consume trend for "green" products is inducing the replacement of surface-active agents in these formulations by natural surfactants, so-called biosurfactants. In addition to their surfactant capacity, many biosurfactants can act as good emulsifiers, which is an extra advantage in the preparation of green cosmetic products. In this work, a biosurfactant obtained from Lactobacillus paracasei was used as a stabilizing agent in oil-in-water emulsions containing essential oils and natural antioxidant extract. In the presence of biosurfactant, maximum percentages of emulsion volumes (EV=100%) were observed, with droplets sizes about 199nm. These results were comparable with the ones obtained using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), a synthetic well known surfactant with high emulsify capacity. Moreover, the biosurfactant and emulsions cytotoxicity was evaluated using a mouse fibroblast cell line. Solutions containing 5g/L of biosurfactant presented cell proliferation values of 97%, whereas 0.5g/L of SDS showed a strong inhibitory effect. Overall, the results herein gathered are very promising towards the development of new green cosmetic formulations.
