The impact of oxidative stress damage induced by the environmental stressors on COVID-19

Abstract: The ongoing pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a substantial stressor that is greatly impacting environmental sustainability. Besides, the different pre-existing environmental stressors and coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19)-related stressors are further worsening the effects of the viral disease by inducing the generation of oxidative stress. The generated oxidative stress results in nucleic acid damage associated with viral mutations, that could potentiall… Show more

“…It is known that chronic stress can stimulate the conserved transcriptional response to adversit through the sympathetic nervous system, leading to the induction of proinflammatory cytokines and the suppression of genes involved in the production of antibodies and interferons, causing vulnerability to viral infections. Proinflammatory cytokines induce chronic inflammation and generate ROS, thus producing an unbalanced oxidative stress response [ 58 ]. Oxidative stress results from an imbalance in the generation of oxidizing compounds and the performance of antioxidant defense systems [ 59 ].…”

“…The role of G6PDd on viral diseases may result from its potential role in oxidative stress metabolism, which also of relevance in the case of COVID-19 disease [ 94 , 95 ]. Since G6PDd results in the redox imbalance in the erythrocytes, due to hemolysis and tissue damage originated from insufficient oxygen transportation, G6PDd might be a risk factor for those infected by SARS-CoV-2 [ 3 , 94 , 96 , 97 ].…”

“…Limited access to clean water and insufficient water consumption are the important factors that causes oxidative stress formation. Clean and sufficient water consumption is highly important during the period when the body struggles with oxidative stress using many molecules grouped in enzymatic systems (30).…”
