Rationale Residues of veterinary drugs in food matrices have to be detected, identified and confirmed at low concentrations. Data‐independent acquisition (DIA) methods such as the sequential window acquisition of all theoretical spectra (SWATH) permit the extraction of relatively clean spectra out of complex matrices. Such spectra can be significantly improved by using a modified SWATH algorithm which provides several times narrower mass isolation windows without affecting the cycle time. Methods A quadrupole‐time‐of‐flight mass spectrometer was operated in a partially overlapping SWATH mode. Unlike in conventional SWATH, acquisition sequences are not identically repeated, but each sequence is initiated with a mass intercept (mass shift). Pearson correlation is used to assign HRMS‐resolved product ions to the precursor mass of interest. Trace analytes (veterinary drugs) in a complex matrix extract (bovine liver) were investigated. Results Utilizing identical cycle times, the partially overlapping SWATH mode produced for the investigated small molecules a significantly higher selectivity than the conventional SWATH acquisition mode. The acquisition strategy enables long ion accumulation times and therefore the required high sensitivity of detection. The study investigates the quality of the obtained product ion spectra and compares it with that in conventional acquisition modes. Conclusions The modified SWATH mode permits high duty cycles in combination with narrow virtual mass windows. The technique is a further step toward harvesting a HRMS product ion spectrum out of a data‐independent acquisition which moves closer towards the quality of a dedicated precursor unit isolation product ion spectrum.

Os Contaminantes de Interesse Emergente (CIEs) passaram a ser detectados e quantificados a partir da década de 1990 após o advento e o aperfeiçoamento de técnicas analíticas capazes de quantificar em escala traço (µg L -1 ) e ultra-traço (ng L -1 ) em matrizes aquosas. O crescimento desenfreado da população humana e a necessidade de aumentar a produção de alimentos, fez com que surgisse a necessidade de desenvolver métodos de extração e preparo de amostras mais versáteis, menor consumo de reagentes, maior diversidade em relação ao CIE e o tipo de amostra e que seja capaz de ser aplicado em menor tempo e em qualquer laboratório. Diante disso, em 2003 é apresentado a comunidade científica um método denominado QuEChERS (do inglês Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, Safe). Tal método representou um enorme avanço em relação ao preparo e extração da amostra, permitindo analisar uma maior diversidade e quantidade de resíduos. Este trabalho tem por objetivo apresentar os fundamentos do método QuEChERS, bem como as modificações que vem sendo realizadas a fim de atingir uma maior variedade de amostras e resíduos. The determination of organic and inorganic pollutants in fish samples is a complex and demanding process, due to their high protein and fat content. Various novel sorbents including graphene, graphene oxide, molecular imprinted polymers, carbon nanotubes and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported for the extraction and preconcentration of a wide range of contaminants from fish tissue. MOFs are crystalline porous materials that are composed of metal ions or clusters coordinated with organic linkers. Those materials exhibit extraordinary properties including high surface area, tunable pore size as well as good thermal and chemical stability. Therefore, metal-organic frameworks have been recently used in many fields of analytical chemistry including sample pretreatment, fabrication of stationary phases and chiral separations. Various MOFs, and especially their composites or hybrids, have been successfully utilized for the sample preparation of fish samples for the determination of organic (i.e., antibiotics, antimicrobial compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, etc.) and inorganic pollutants (i.e., mercury, palladium, cadmium, lead, etc.) as such or after functionalization with organic compounds.
