Use of modified Richards model to predict isothermal and non-isothermal microbial growth

Abstract: Mathematical models are often used to predict microbial growth in food products. An important class of these models involves the adaptation of classical sigmoid functions, such as the Gompertz and logistic functions. This study aimed to validate the use of the modified Richards model in various situations, which have not previously been tested. The model was obtained through solving a system of two differential equations and could be applied to both isothermal and non-isothermal environments. To test and valid… Show more

“…This is a double-entry model and is well-established in forestry management for volume [22,25,51] and biomass estimates [19,52]. Although the Richards and Weibull models include biological interpretations, population dynamics, and growth over time [53][54][55], Campos and Leite [56] highlighted the Schumacher-Hall model results in less biased estimates.…”

“…Observam-se valores de BF e AF próximos a 1 nos procedimentos de validação isotérmica. Comparando os índices obtidos neste trabalho com a literatura, é possível observar que o modelo descreveu satisfatoriamente o crescimento fúngico em polpa de abacaxi, demonstrando alta concordância com os dados experimentais e estando em concordância com a faixa aceitável encontrada por outros autores na literatura em estudos isotérmicos (Teleken et al, 2018;Silva et al, 2013Silva et al, , 2017.…”

“…The Baranyi and Robert model provides biological interpretations for lag phases through physiological state parameters (Baranyi and Robert, 1995). Because the Baranyi and Robert model can illustrate a few external factors related to the growth of microorganisms through physiological state parameters for the lag phase, this model is often called a semimechanistic model, even some scientist classify it into the mechanistic model (Teleken et al, 2018).…”

“…In the fermentation and controlling microorganisms field, to determine the status of bacterial populations, sampling every time have not to be done. This can provide efficiency of time, effort and cost (Teleken et al, 2018). The mathematical model is one of the tools for predicting bacterial population, both in the scope of fermentation and also the shelf life and distribution of product.…”
