Sarcopenia

Abstract: Sarcopenia is a very common, but frequently overlooked and undertreated geriatric syndrome comprising pronounced muscle mass and strength/performance loss. Estimated prevalence is between 5 and 40% in the general population, accompanied by an exponential incline with increasing age. Sarcopenia is connected to atrophy and loss of muscle fibers and motor units, affecting primarily the fast-twitch muscle fibers und their motor units. Fast-twitch muscle fibers seem to be more prone to failure of function and loss … Show more

“…One of the major pathologies underlying age-related skeletal muscle failure is insulin resistance, which alters glucose metabolism [ 3 , 4 , 21 , 118 , 130 , 164 ]. Numerous studies signify that bee products may protect against muscle wasting by correcting metabolic dysregulations in skeletal muscle via activation of some of the key nutrient sensing molecules [ 69 , 96 , 100 , 106 , 109 , 111 ].…”

“…Loss of lean body mass is a direct effect of the inflammatory and oxidative conditions that develop with aging [ 1 , 2 ]—described as inflammaging. Both inflammatory mediators and free radicals, which are highly expressed in older seniors and in patients with chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, cause remarkable shrinkage of fast-twitch type II fibers promoting their transformation into the slow-twitch type I fibers [ 1 , 3 , 4 , 5 ].…”

“…Sarcopenia is an extrahepatic complication related to skeletal muscle, secondary to NAFLD [ 52 , 53 ]. Moreover, sarcopenia is characterized by a loss of muscle mass, decreased cross-sectional area of muscle fibers in skeletal muscle.…”

“…34 Moreover, it has been shown that physiological decline of dehydroepiandrosterone, growth hormone, and IGF -1 contributed to the development of sarcopenia. 35 The role of diet Additionally, the main problem in older people is inadequate protein intake compared with the overall protein requirements. Inadequate intakes of protein 36 and vitamin D 37 have been shown to promote sarcopenic obesity.…”
