The structure of schizotypal personality traits: a cross-national study

Abstract: The results are consistent with the conceptual notion that schizotypal personality is a multifaceted construct and support the validity and utility of SPQ in cross-cultural research. We discuss theoretical and clinical implications of our results for diagnostic systems, psychosis models and cross-national mental health strategies.

“…Previous factorial studies have demonstrated that schizotypy is a multidimensional construct in nature, composed basically of three factors (cognitive‐perceptual, interpersonal, and disorganization), phenotypically similar to that found in patients with psychosis (eg, positive, negative and disorganization symptoms) (Fonseca‐Pedrero, Debbané et al, ). Just as schizophrenia is phenotypically heterogeneous, encompassing a broad range of emotional, cognitive, perceptual, social and behavioural functions, schizotypy involves a diverse set of traits from different psychological systems (Cohen, Mohr, Ettinger, Chan, & Park, ).…”

“…The SPQ has been demonstrated to have adequate psychometric properties in many studies (e.g., Chen et al, 1997; Cicero, ; Fonseca‐Pedrero et al, ; Raine, ). Furthermore, a cross‐national study, conducted by Fonseca‐Pedrero et al () using a large and multinational sample, also first suggested that the SPQ has good psychometric properties across countries. In order to compose a DC‐SPQ, all of the items were selected from the Chinese‐translated version of the SPQ (Chen et al, 1997) based on the psychometric characteristic.…”

“…Schizotypy has several possible phenotypic expressions, namely schizotypal traits (at a behavioural level), schizotypal personality disorder, and psychosis (at sub-clinical and clinical levels, respectively) that are inter-related, but not necessarily interchangeable (Lenzenweger, 2010;Linscott et al, in press). According to this definition, schizotypy represents a theoretical construct and aetiological model of psychosis (Fonseca-Pedrero et al, 2018). Most people with schizotypy do not make the transition to psychosis (Kwapil et al, 2012;Rössler et al, 2013).…”

“…People who score highly on the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire have schizotypal personality disorder (Raine, 1991). Schizotypal traits being on a continuum with the schizophrenia spectrum, could help to detect individuals at risk for psychosis (Ettinger et al, 2014;Fonseca-Pedrero et al, 2018). A further similarity between schizotypy and psychosis is the presence of positive and negative dimensions (Kendler, 1991;Liddle, 1987).…”
