The Effects on Obesity Related Peptides of Laparoscopic Gastric Band Applications in Morbidly Obese Patients

Abstract: Elevated plasma resistin, apelin, chemerin, and visfatin levels in morbidly obese patients are gradually reduced after weight loss. According to these findings, LAGB surgery is found to be an important and efficient means for morbidly obese patients both to lose weight and to develop a better metabolic risk profile in a short time period.

“…Consistently, high resistin levels also correlate with increased risk of all-cause and cardiovascular death [80]. It is also remarkable that the excess of resistin is among the cytokines that define the metabolic unhealthy state, associated with obesity, as demonstrated by the decrease of circulating resistin levels after bariatric surgery [81,82].…”

“…It is tempting to hypothesize that this adipokine could contribute to the inflammatory state and increased risk for cardiovascular events characterizing patients with type 2 diabetes in a direct way rather than with diabetes itself. Plasma levels of visfatin are gradually reduced after bariatric surgery-related weight loss [82].…”

“…Weight loss after bariatric surgery is mainly due to the loss of visceral fat [21], but whether the secretion of adipokines is then modulated remains to be fully established as the response varies [22][23][24] and is not always significant [25][26][27][28][29][30]. We, therefore, conducted a meta-analysis and systematic review to investigate the effect of different types of bariatric surgeries on these adipokines.…”

“…Plasma apelin in obese animals and humans has a high concentration (Arica et al, 2018;Boucher et al, 2005). In 2005, Boucher et al showed that apelin was synthesized and secreted in adipocytes and that there was a close relationship between apelin and insulin in in vivo and in vitro conditions (Boucher et al, 2005).…”
