Smart devices along with sensors are gaining in popularity with the promise of making life easier for the owner. As the number of sensors in an Internet of Things (IoT) system grows, a question arises as to whether the transmission between the sensors and the IoT devices is reliable and whether the user receives alerts correctly and in a timely manner. Increased deployment of IoT devices with sensors increases possible safety risks. It is IoT devices that are often misused to create Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which is due to the weak security of IoT devices against misuse. The article looks at the issue from the opposite point of view, when the target of a DDoS attack are IoT devices in a smart home environment. The article examines how IoT devices and the entire smart home will behave if they become victims of a DDoS attack aimed at the smart home from the outside. The question of security was asked in terms of whether a legitimate user can continue to control and receive information from IoT sensors, which is available during normal operation of the smart home. The case study was done both from the point of view of the attack on the central units managing the IoT sensors directly, as well as on the smart-home personal assistant systems, with which the user can control the IoT sensors. The article presents experimental results for individual attacks performed in the case study and demonstrates the resistance of real IoT sensors against DDoS attack. The main novelty of the article is that the implementation of a personal assistant into the smart home environment increases the resistance of the user’s communication with the sensors. This study is a pilot testing the selected sensor sample to show behavior of smart home under DDoS attack.

This article surveys the mathematical principles essential for understanding the thermal management of Li-ion batteries, the current technological state of the art, and the solution. Since the thermal management of electric drive vehicles has environmental, economic, and safety impacts, this review focuses on the efficient methods of battery thermal management (BTM) that were proposed to overcome the major challenges in the electric vehicle industry. The first section examines the perspective of battery-driven vehicles, the principles of Li-ion batteries with a thermal runaway, and their implication for battery safety. The second section discusses mathematical approaches for effective BTM modeling, including the thermal-fluidic network model, lumped capacitance model, spatial resolution lumped capacitance model, equivalent circuit model, impedance-based model, and data-driven model. The third section presents the current state-of-the-art technologies, including air-based, liquid-based, PCM-based, in situ BTM methods, and heat pipe and thermoelectric module-based methods. The conclusion section summarizes the findings from existing research and the possible future directions to achieve and employ better thermal management techniques.

Internet of Things (IoT) is a new buzzword in information technology where real-world physical objects are made smart by integrating them with internet-enabled technologies. The things can sense information around them, communicate the sensed information over some protocol and employ the information to solve real-life problems. In IoT, several technologies are integrated under a common umbrella so that they can connect and exchange data over a network protocol. A huge amount of data is generated from diverse geographical locations with the consequent urge for fast aggregation of overall sensed information, leading to an increase in the need to store and process such data in a more efficient and effective manner. The traditional fields of embedded systems, WSN, real-time analytics, automation system, machine learning and others all contribute to enabling the IoT. This article is focused on discussing the various IoT technologies, protocols and their application and usage in our daily life. It also summarizes the current state-of-the-art IoT architecture in various spheres conventionally and all related terminologies that will give the forthcoming researchers a glimpse of IoT as a whole.
