Antibiotics are a common practice in veterinary medicine, mainly for therapeutic purposes. Sectors of application include livestock farming, aquacultures, and bee-keeping, where bacterial infections are frequent and can be economically damaging. However, antibiotics are usually administered in sub-therapeutic doses as prophylactic and growth promoting agents. Due to their excessive use, antibiotic residues can be present in foods of animal origin, which include meat, fish, milk, eggs, and honey, posing health risks to consumers. For this reason, authorities have set maximum residue limits (MRLs) of certain antibiotics in food matrices, while analytical methods for their determination have been developed. This work focuses on antibiotic extraction and determination, part of which was presented at the "1st Conference in Chemistry for Graduate, Postgraduate Students and PhD Candidates at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki". Taking a step further, this paper is a review of the most recent sample preparation protocols applied for the extraction of sulfonamide antibiotics from food samples and their determination with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), covering a five-year period.

Triazine-based organic polymers@SiO 2 nanospheres were prepared and applied as an extraction coating onto stainless steel wires and the wires were filled into polyetheretherketone tube for in-tube solid-phase microextraction. Taking polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as targets, main factors affecting extraction performance of the tube were investigated through coupling to high performance liquid chromatography. Under the optimum conditions, an online analytical method for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was established with large linear ranges (0.010-20 µg/L), low limits of detection (0.003-0.010 µg/L), high enrichment factors (533-2954), and good repeatability (relative standard deviations <1.7% for intraday test, <5.0% for interday test). The analysis method was successfully applied to the detection of trace targets in real water samples and the relative recoveries ranged from 82.9 to 119.9%, which demonstrated the applicability of extraction tube in sample preparation. A zirconium(IV)-based metal organic framework, composed of 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid ligands and Zr O (OH) clusters, was successfully fabricated. Characterizations were performed on fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and thermogravimetric analysis, which confirmed that it possessed large specific surface area, high pore volume, and strong acid resistant stability. Furthermore, the prepared material containing biphenyl skeleton and a large number of Zr-O bonds, can grasp acid herbicides especially phenoxyacetic acid herbicides with aromatic structures through π-π interaction, hydrophobic interaction and Zr-O-H bonds. Based on these advantages, a method was developed for the determination of four phenoxyacetic acid herbicides from vegetable samples. Under the optimal conditions, wide linearities from 0.3 to 250 μg/L and low limits of detection from 0.1 to 0.5 μg/L were obtained. The intra- and interday relative standard deviations were 1.56-3.92 and 5.01-7.65%, respectively. The proposed method was applied to analyze phenoxyacetic acid herbicides residues in the tomato, cucumber, and white gourd samples. The satisfactory recoveries (86.12-103.44%) for the spiked samples in vegetable samples were achieved which demonstrated the method was an efficient pretreatment procedure and has a potential application for the trace determination of phenoxyacetic acids from a complex matrix.
