Women’s finger pressure sensitivity at rest and recalled body awareness during partnered sexual activity

Abstract: Greater vibrotactile sensitivity has been related to better erectile function in men, and vibrotactile and pressure tactile sensitivity have been related to better sexual function in women. Our previous study found that, for both sexes, greater recalled body awareness during last sexual relation correlated with greater recalled desire and arousal. Using the same sample of that study (68 women and 48 men, recruited in the Lisbon area, Portugal), we tested if greater recalled body awareness during last sexual re… Show more

“…Intensity of the awareness of the body before and after drinking was assessed by a visual analogue scale with a picture representing a human figure drawn with lines of different thickness. Responses relative to the figure vary between 1 (the least thick lines) and 7 (the thickest lines [ 2 , 28 , 46 48 ].…”

“…A variety of sexual touches have been identified from survey data (e.g., Willis & Rinck, 1983), indicating certain touch pressures, patterns and styles may be predictive of pleasure in sexual intercourse (Herbenick et al, 2018). Greater tactile sensitivity is related to increased sexual (penile vaginal) intercourse (Brody et al, 2008), as well as increased orgasms following penile vaginal intercourse and enhanced sexual arousal in females (Costa et al, 2017). Greater vibrotactile sensitivity is also related to better erectile function in men -suggesting that tactile sensitivity, across sexes, may be important to sexual arousal and function (Rowland, 1998).…”

“…Higher scores indicated greater awareness of body and space. For example, the degree of bodily self-awareness during the last sexual encounter correlated positively with finger pressure sensitivity in women (Costa, Pestana, Costa, & Wittmann, 2017). Participants marked their sense of time passage through the questions "How intensively did you perceive time?"…”
