In the present article, a case study is reported regarding an investigation carried out in order to assess radioactivity concentration, heavy metals pollution and mineralogy of a beach stretch extending from Soverato to Squillace municipalities of the Ionian coast of Calabria, South of Italy, a popular tourist destination, especially in summer. The analysis of radionuclides contents was performed by using a High Purity Germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray detector, in order to quantify the average specific activity of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K natural radionuclides and 137Cs anthropogenic radioisotope. The absorbed dose rate and the annual effective dose equivalent radiological hazard indices were also estimated. Furthermore, X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry measurements were carried out for the quantitative elemental analysis of the sand, in order to investigate any possible chemical pollution by heavy metals. For this aim, different indices such as Enrichment Factor (EF), Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Contamination Factor (CF) and Pollution Load Index (PLI) were applied to estimate the level of toxicity imposed on the ecosystem by the detected heavy metals. Finally, in order to identify the crystalline mineral components of the investigated sand samples, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Micro-Raman Scattering (MRS) measurements were carried out.

Evaluating the Effect of Ionic Liquid on Biosorption Potential of Peanut Waste: Experimental and Theoretical Studies

Peanut skin having polyphenols as major constituents is a natural, abundant, and environmentally friendly potent biosorbent for aquatic pollutants such as heavy metals. Its natural potential can be enhanced several times by treating it with ionic liquids—the green solvents. This report presents a complete study on biosorption of divalent cadmium ions using ionic liquid-treated peanut skin. Initially, both peanut biomasses, skin and shells, were tested, and peanut skin was used for thorough experimentation because of its higher adsorption potential ( q e values). Ionic liquids are highly green and designed solvents with vast adjustable striking features such as high thermal and chemical stability, insignificant vapor pressure, wide electrochemical assortment, non-volatility, non-flammability, less toxicity, and high recycling ability. Peanut skin after treatment with ionic liquids was characterized via FTIR, TGA, SEM, and XRD. The biosorption process was optimized with respect to time, temperature, metal ion concentrations, agitation speed, pH, and adsorbent dose. Data obtained were interpreted by kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic models. The biosorbent and ionic liquid both are regenerated and recycled up to three times, so cost effectiveness is a promising thing.

ResumenLa presencia de metales pesados en moluscos bivalvos implica un grave problema para la salud de los consumidores de este tipo de alimento. Por ello, el objetivo de la investigación fue determinar la presencia de metales pesados en Anadara tuberculosa, moluscode importancia comercial en Puerto Bolívar, Ecuador. El método utilizado para cuantificar la concentración de metales pesados fue la espectrofotometría de absorción atómica, se determinó la concentración de seis metales: Plomo (Pb), Arsénico (As), Mercurio (Hg), Cadmio (Cd), Cromo (Cr) y Cobalto (Co). Los valores promedios obtenidos, expresados en mg.kg-1 fueron: Pb (7,52 ± 0,46); As (1,55 ± 0,14); Hg (364,38 ± 91, 39); Cd (1,68 ± 0,28); Cr (3,89 ± 1,82) y Co (2,71 ± 0,34 en Anadara tuberculosa. Los resultados muestran que el Pb, As, Cd, y Hg superan los límites máximos permisibles, el Mercurio supera en más de 100 veces el valor límite. La talla más pequeña (3-4 cm) del molusco en estudio posee la capacidad de bioacumular mayor concentración de Pb, Cd y Cr.Palabras Clave: A. tuberculosa;metales trazas; moluscos bivalvos;bioacumulación. AbstractThe presence of heavy metals in bivalve molluscs implies a serious problem for the consumers health of this type of food. Therefore, the objective of the present investigation was to determine the presence of heavy metals in Anadara tuberculosa, mollusc of commercial importance at Puerto Bolívar, Ecuador. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was the method used to quantify the concentration of heavy metals. The concentration of six metals was determined: lead (Pb), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr) and cobalt (Co). The average values obtained, expressed in mg.kg-1 were: Pb (7.52 ± 0.46); As (1.55 ± 0.14); Hg (364.38 ± 91.39); Cd (1.68 ± 0.28); Cr (3,89 ± 1,82) and Co (2,71 ± 0,34 in A. tuberculosa The results show that Pb, As, Cd, and Hg exceed the maximum permissible limits, mercury exceeds by more than 100 times the limit value. The smaller size (3-4 cm) studied mollusc, has the capacity to bioaccumulate higher concentration of Pb, Cd and Cr.
