Development of new restorer lines for CMS <i>ogura</i> system with the use of resynthesized oilseed rape (<i>Brassica napus</i> L.)

Abstract: Resynthesized (RS) oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) is potentially of great interest for hybrid breeding. However, a major problem with the direct use of RS B. napus is the quality of seed oil (high level of erucic acid) and seed meal (high glucosinolate content), which does not comply with double-low quality oilseed rape. Thus, additional developments are needed before RS B. napus can be introduced into breeding practice. In this study, RS oilseed rape was obtained through crosses between B. rapa ssp. chinens… Show more

“…There are several systems for controlling cross-pollination in oilseed rape. The most widespread is based on cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) ogura hybridization system, which is characterized by the complete stability of sterile male cytoplasm and the Rfo restorer gene from Raphanus sativus L. (Bartkowiak-Broda et al 1979;Brown et al 2003;Szała et al 2016).…”

“…Due to their wide adaptation and ability to thrive under varying agroclimatic conditions, brassica crops are grown throughout the world for food, animal forage, fodder and industrial applications (Eckes et al 2017). In Poland within Brassica species, winter oilseed rape is the most important oil-protein plant (Liersch et al 2016;Szała et al 2016;Sosnowska et al 2017).…”

“…Similar results were obtained by Sosnowska et al (2017) in investigations of collections of spring and WOSR cultivars, B. rapa and Brassica oleracea, as well as nearly 50 RS lines and semi-RS lines. Confirmation of the distinctiveness of resynthesized lines by AFLP markers shows that these lines can be valuable material for creating separate gene pools, especially for hybrid breeding of WOSR (Szała et al 2016;Sosnowska et al 2017). Jesske et al (2013) analyzed 126 genotypes including 55 natural B. napus genotypes (winter, spring, Asian), and vegetable/cabbage forms and 71 resynthetic lines using 20 AFLP primer combinations.…”

“…This approach enables the comprehensive selection of CMS ogura lines and restorer lines which will be used for further crosses and then evaluated for general and specific combination ability in multi-experimental field trials (Nowosad et al 2016(Nowosad et al , 2017Bocianowski et al 2018Bocianowski et al , 2019. In addition, demonstrating the significant genetic separateness of the resynthesized lines (RS) of rapeseed from commonly cultivated double low WOSR cultivars will enable a broadening of the variability within Brassica and the use of RS lines in breeding new winter rapeseed cultivars (Szała et al 2016;Sosnowska et al 2017).…”
