Measuring Oxidative DNA Damage With 8-Hydroxy-2’-Deoxyguanosine Levels in Patients With Laryngeal Cancer

Abstract: We determined that laryngeal cancer was associated with oxidative stress, which may be quantified by measuring 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine. For a patient with a suspicious laryngeal lesion, 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine levels in blood and urine can provide advance information about the likely diagnosis.

“…Increased levels of DNA by-products expressed during oxidative stress such as 8-OHdG have been demonstrated in various tumors. [8][9][10]16] Kumar et al [10] found saliva 8-OHdG levels 1.6-fold higher in patients with SCC of the head and neck then in control subjects. Kaur et al [17] compared saliva 8-OHdG levels between patients with oral precancerous lesions, cancer and a control group of healthy age-and gender-matched individuals.…”

“…It is reported to be increased with different cancers. [8][9][10] Lipid peroxidation caused by free radicals is an important pathological process involving the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in biological membranes. [11] Oxidative stress through lipid peroxidation is considered to play an important role in the development of multiple diseases including carcinogenesis.…”

“…Because of a possible increase in 8-OHDG levels in stored blood can cause gene mutations and false protein coding after blood transfusion, it is important to prevent injury in the DNA bases. Increasing oxidative stress and decreasing antioxidant capacity due to storage time (3,9,15,17,26), especially OH . radicals, can lead to DNA oxidation by damaging nuclear proteins and DNA (9).…”
