A comprehensive review of microRNA-related polymorphisms in gastric cancer

Abstract: ABSTRACT. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small non-coding RNA molecules of about 22 nucleotides in length. miRNAs are highly conserved in both plants and animals, and function as gene regulators by binding to the 3'-untranslated region of target mRNAs for cleavage and/ or translational repression. miRNA biogenesis, stability, and regulation of expression are strongly sequence dependent. Sequence variants, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in pri-miRNA, pre-miRNA, promoter regions, or miRNA-targ… Show more

“…Consequently, CC homozygotes, which undergo a change in the pattern of the expression of the mir196a2 gene, are more susceptible to cancer. 28 In conclusion, our findings showed that CT heterozygosity in mir23a gene significantly related with risk of multiple sclerosis (OR=2.3, p=0.048). However, extensive studies are required to gain more reliable and authentic results.…”

“…24 Moreover, miR155 has been characterized as a component of the primary macrophage response to different types of inflammatory mediators such as IFN-β or Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α). [25][26][27][28][29] It has been shown that miR155 is induced by bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in a human monocytic cell line. 30 Some study in Egyptian population proposed that mir196a2 rs11614913 polymorphism could be associated with asthma severity.…”

“…Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common malignant cancers and the 3rd leading cause of tumor death worldwide . The pathogenesis and risk factors of GC is complex and are associated with several factors . Smoking, helicobacter pylori infection, alcohol consumption, pernicious anemia, unhealthy diet, and old age are the risks factors that lead to the initiation of GC .…”

[7][8][9][10] Smoking, helicobacter pylori infection, alcohol consumption, pernicious anemia, unhealthy diet, and old age are the risks factors that lead to the initiation of GC. [11][12][13][14] Upon diagnosis, metastatic or locally advanced disease could be found in about two-thirds of GC patients.…”

“…4,5 Mutations in the promoter regions of certain miRNAs usually cause changes in their expression. 6,7 In addition, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in some miRNAs may be closely related to their binding ability to target mRNAs. 8 Therefore, these SNPs might affect the individualized differences in their expression or functions; therefore, it predict the prognosis of certain diseases.…”
