The relationship between health-related fitness and quality of life in postmenopausal women from Southern Taiwan

Abstract: BackgroundHealth-related fitness has been reported to be associated with improved quality of life (QoL) in the elderly. Health-related fitness is comprised of several dimensions that could be enhanced by specific training regimens. It has remained unclear how various dimensions of health-related fitness interact with QoL in postmenopausal women.ObjectiveThe purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between the dimensions of health-related fitness and QoL in elderly women.MethodsA cohort … Show more

“…Such is their importance that, in elderly people, having high levels of strength in the lower limbs and having good balance are important requisites for being independent and being able to carry out daily activities 5–7. For this reason, increasing the levels of strength and balance achieved by practicing physical exercise,3,8,9 constitutes one of the optimal preventative strategies and plays a key role in the prevention of falls,3,10,11 as demonstrated by a variety of studies 1214. Thus, one of the priorities for both the treatment and prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis is the improvement of strength and balance by means of practice of physical exercise, because of the implication of both these physical qualities in falls 15–17.…”

“…Therefore, the aging phenomenon needs to be addressed using suitable strategies that maintain the health and QoL of elderly people for as long as possible (Kremer, Holthuysen, & Boesveldt, 2014). The QoL has shown a negative correlation with age (Hsu, Chen, Kuo, Fan, Lee, & Hsu, 2014). Physiological changes that appear during the ageing process may affect the QoL and functionality of elderly people (Sui, LaMonte, Laditka, Hardin, Chase, Hooker, et al, 2007).…”

“…QoL related to health is often used to evaluate the the health status of people (Hsu, Chen, Kuo, Fan, Lee, & Hsu, 2014, Miyakoshi, Hongo, Maekawa, Ishikawa, Shimada, & Itoi, 2007. Predictors of QoL are necessary in order to recognise whether elderly people enjoy well-being in their daily lives.…”
