Influence of population and exercise protocol characteristics on hemodynamic determinants of post-aerobic exercise hypotension

Abstract: Due to differences in study populations and protocols, the hemodynamic determinants of post-aerobic exercise hypotension (PAEH) are controversial. This review analyzed the factors that might influence PAEH hemodynamic determinants, through a search on PubMed using the following key words: “postexercise” or “post-exercise” combined with “hypotension”, “blood pressure”, “cardiac output”, and “peripheral vascular resistance”, and “aerobic exercise” combined only with “blood pressure”. Forty-seven studies were sel… Show more

“…The acute effects of aerobic endurance exercise on BP have been widely studied among different populations [48][49][50][51][52] and using a wide variety of exercise protocols. 25,53,54 Previously, Guidry et al 55 suggested that PEH following aerobic endurance exercise is a low-threshold phenomenon. They reported that the immediate BP-lowering effects of short-duration (15 min), lowerintensity exercise (40% VO 2peak ) are comparable to those of higher amounts of exercise (30 min at 60% VO 2peak ).…”

“…Os indivíduos do estudo eram submetidos a sessões diárias de exercícios que tinham características predominantemente aeró-bias, as quais estão bem documentadas e promovem hipotensão pós-exercício por até 24 horas 20 . Como os indivíduos recebiam esse estímulo todos os dias, os mesmos estavam sempre sob o efeito hipotensor da atividade física.…”

“…Autonomic and non-autonomic factors influence changes in blood pressure during and post-exercise 18 . Studies regarding PEH often find controversial results, since the characteristics of the exercise protocol and different populations influence the results 19 . So far, no study has assessed if previous warm-up influences PEH achieved after maximal exercise.…”
