Growth Performance of Lambs Fed Diet Supplemented with Rice Bran Oil as Such or as Calcium Soap

Abstract: Forty two Malpura lambs (21 d old) were divided into three groups of 14 each consisting of 8 females and 6 males. Lambs were allowed to suckle their respective dams twice daily up to weaning (13 wks) and offered free choice concentrate and roughage in a cafeteria system. The lambs in control group were fed conventional concentrate mixture, in RBO group concentrate mixture fortified with 4% industrial grade rice bran oil and in Ca-soap rice bran oil (as in RBO group) was supplemented in the form of calcium soap… Show more

“…The signi cant difference (P<0.05) in rumen protozoan population between treatment diets was the highest increase seen in the Diet B and Diet C groups. Similar to the results of this research, concentrate and bypass fat supplementation increased protozoan population in ewes [74]. Conversely, reported by Li et al [45], showed number of total bacteria, methanogens and protozoa were decrease with the in increasing of concentrate ratio in the diet.…”

“…Additionally, high TDN in the ration with calcium soap flaxseed oil supplementation was potential to increase the availability of nutrients for rumen bacterial degradation process. Bhatt et al (2013) reported that the addition of 4 % rice bran oil in the form of calcium soaps in vivo can increase (P<0.05) total VFA production, body weight gain, body weight, dry matter intake, and lower feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the addition of oil in non protected or control (without the addition of oil) .…”

“…A number of research articles[ 1 , 3 , 5 , 12 – 15 ] have emerged evaluating rice by-products as dietary sources of nutrients in sheep production systems. However, to our current knowledge, since the late 1980’s and early 1990's research of [ 6 , 7 ], there has been no other peer-reviewed published information on sheep supplementation with rice bran in Australian prime lamb production systems.…”
