Safflower yellow injection combined with conventional therapy in treating unstable angina pectoris: a meta-analysis

Abstract: Safflower yellow injection as an adjunct therapy with conventional drugs shows advantages in easing the clinical symptoms of unstable angina and improving ECG over basic therapy alone. However, the conclusions should be interpreted with care until more high-quality RCTs are reported.

“…4,5 Although the exact mechanism underlying PAH is not fully understood, studies using monocrotaline (MCT)-induced models of PAH suggest that inflammatory status and oxidative stress are the main contributors to disease pathogenesis; 6 pulmonary vascular remodelling can be attenuated through inhibition of pulmonary inflammatory cell proliferation and leukocyte infiltration; 7 and alleviating oxidative stress can prevent pulmonary vascular remodeling. 8 Injectable Safflower extract is widely used in Chinese medicine, particularly for the treatment of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases, 9 and has been approved as a medicinal drug by the State Food and Drug Administration since 2005. 10 Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA), which is the main chemical component of safflower, has been shown to possess many pharmacological activities.…”

“…Carthamus tinctorius injection ( CTI) (2.5 and 0.625 g/kg) significantly inhibited the typical ECG S-T segment elevation, reduced concentration of IL-6 and TNF-α in serum, suppressed over expression of Bax protein and also inhibited the reduction of BCl-2 expression and markedly depressed the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio in isoprenaline-induced acute myocardial ischemia (AMI). These findings demonstrate that CTI is cardioprotective against AMI in rats and is likely to related to decrease inflammatory response mediated by TNF-α and IL-6, down-regulate protein level of Bax and up-regulate that of Bcl-2 in the heart tissue (43) .…”

“…HSYA injections have been recently reported to be effective as an adjuvant drug in the management of angina pectoris [ 9 , 87 , 88 ]. The proposed mechanisms of action include regulating the intracellular flow of Ca 2+ , promoting blood circulation, vasodilation, and increasing blood supply for tissue and organs.…”
