Ocular Risk Factors for Exudative AMD: A Novel Semiautomated Grading System

Abstract: Purpose. To evaluate the contribution of the ocular risk factors in the conversion of the fellow eye of patients with unilateral exudative AMD, using a novel semiautomated grading system. Materials and Methods. Single-center, retrospective study including 89 consecutive patients with unilateral exudative AMD and ≥3 years of followup. Baseline color fundus photographs were graded using an innovative grading software, RetmarkerAMD (Critical Health SA). Results. The follow-up period was 60.9 ± 31.3 months. The o… Show more

“…Also of note is the fact that in this study we used software to quantify the ocular fundus lesions and to standardize the grading process (Retmarker AMD Research software) [33]. This software incorporates the International Classification Grading System, thus allowing a comparison with other major AMD European studies, such as the Rotterdam Study [18], the EUREYE Study [19], the Reykjavik Eye Study [21], and the Tromso Eye Study [27].…”

“…Briefly, the grading process always began by calibration, using the optic disc as a reference, with an adopted diameter of 1.5 mm. Afterwards, it was performed as previously described [33]. The stages of ARM disease were graded based on the features observed.…”

“…The central subfield overlaps with the central macula (fig. 1) [24]. Other areas of RNP were also qualitatively analyzed for classification into ischemic/nonischemic subtypes in the final visit.…”

“…The differential grading was supported by software developed to visualize digital color fundus photographs and to grade AMD retinal lesions – RetmarkerAMD Research (Retmarker SA, Coimbra, Portugal). This platform was developed to assist manual grading of lesions, according to the International Age-Related Macular Epidemiological Study Group Classification [24], and automatically calculates the number of lesions, their size, area and location, as previously described by our group [26]. …”
