A comparison of two methods for determining titanium dioxide marker content in broiler digestibility studies

Abstract: The use of inert markers in broiler diets eliminates the need to quantitatively evaluate feed intake and excreta output to determine diet digestibility, and enables nutrient uptake at specific points along the gastrointestinal tract to be examined. Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) is commonly used for this purpose and measured using a UV-spectrophotometric assay. Two experiments were conducted to observe whether an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES) assay is able to replace the UV… Show more

“…The ground digesta samples were analysed for titanium dioxide content by the method described in [ 29 ]. Apparent ileal zinc digestibility coefficients (COD) were obtained using the following equation (all measures in g/Kg Dry matter): (nutrient/TiO 2 ) diet − (nutrient/TiO 2 ) ileum digesta /(nutrient/TiO 2 ) diet …”

“…Nitrogen content was analyzed by combustion (AOAC 1969) (Thermo Quest NA 2100 Nitrogen and Protein Analyzer; Breda, The Netherlands) and the crude protein ( CP ) content calculated using a 6.25 conversion factor. Titanium dioxide was determined by UV-spectroscopy as described before [ 20 ].…”

“…Phosphorus and Ca contents of the diets were analysed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) following an aqua regia digestion step (AOAC 985.01, Leytem et al., 2008 ). Titanium dioxide was added at a rate of 0.5% to act as an inert marker for nutrient digestibility evaluation and the dietary content quantified by ICP-OES following aqua regia digestion ( Morgan et al., 2014 ). Total phytate content was analysed by a K-Phyt assay (Megazyme, Wicklow, Ireland, UK).…”
