Positive association between Interleukin-8 -251A > T polymorphism and susceptibility to gastric carcinogenesis: a meta-analysis

Abstract: BackgroundsThe associations between the polymorphisms of interleukin-8 (IL-8) gene and gastric carcinogenesis have been extensively investigated in recent years. However, the results remain conflicting rather than conclusive.MethodsA meta-analysis of 18 eligible studies was performed to evaluate the association of IL-8 -251A > T polymorphism with risk of gastric carcinogenesis. A systematic literature search of MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science, CNKI databases was conducted. Statistical analysis was performe… Show more

“…Chemotactic cytokines, which is produced by tumor and endothelial cells, can play an important role in cancer including angiogenesis, progression of tumor, migration, and facilitating evasion of immune surveillance (16 (24) and acts as a member of Glu-Leu-Arg (ELR) motif positive Cysteine-X-Cysteine (CXC) (25) chemokine (26)(27)(28) secreted by tumor cells (25). It is also mainly secreted by monocytes and endothelial cells (4,29).…”

“…However, few other meta-analyses on the association of this polymorphism with other cancers showed a positive association with some of the cancers. An association of this polymorphism was reported by Cheng et al, (2013) for gastric cancer risk in Asian population, for Oral cancer risk in Caucasian population by and for renal cell cancer risk by Chen et al, (2016) in Chinese Han population. In a meta-analysis on association between IL-8 -251 T>A and risk of lung cancer done by Gao et al, (2014), the results showed that the IL-8-251A/T polymorphism was associated with lung cancer susceptibility in Asians and the -251 A allele may increase risk of lung cancer in Asians.…”

“…Recently, variants of the IL-8 gene involved in the aetiology of several cancers have drawn increasing attention. Recently, two meta-analysis [26,27] about Interleukin-8 -251A > T polymorphism indicated that the polymorphism interleukin-8 -251A/T is associated with a significantly increased risk of gastric carcinogenesis, breast cancer and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. This meta-analysis summarize all the available data on the association between IL-8 -251T/A polymorphism and lung cancer risk, including a total of 3265 lung cancer cases and 3607 controls.…”
