Serotype Distribution ofSalmonellaIsolates from Turkey Ground Meat and Meat Parts

Abstract: The aim of the study was to find out the serotype distribution of 169 Salmonella colonies recovered from 112 Salmonella positive ground turkey (115 colonies) and 52 turkey meat parts (54 colonies). Out of 15 Salmonella serotypes: S. Corvallis, S. Kentucky, S. Bredeney, S. Virchow, S. Saintpaul and S. Agona were identified as the predominant serovars at the rates of 27%, 13%, 12%, 12%, 11%, and 10%, respectively. Other serotypes were below 6% of the total isolates. All S. Kentucky and S. Virchow and most of the… Show more

“…As seen from the Table, none of the 4 turkey meat isolates tested were SE, and they were serogrouped in B, C2-C3, and E4. There are similar studies reporting other serogroup prevalences with no SE isolation (13,(23)(24)(25) from turkey meats. High serogroup B detection rates were reported by Folster et al (24) and Kinross et al (25), who also implied an increase in the isolation of serovars within serogroup B in their samples.…”

“…This serovar was previously found as the second most frequent serovar in turkey products in Morocco [30]. In Turkey, Agona was isolated by Erol et al as the predominant serovar from turkeys [31]. In the United States‚ Agona emerged as a public health problem in the seventies.…”

“…In Turkey, few studies have been performed on salmonellosis in dogs (172) and in poultry (173). Recently, different Salmonello serotyps were detected in turkey ground meat and meat parts, and S. corvallis was shown to be the predominant serotype in poultry meat in Turkey (174). Although salmonellosis is considered a threat for public health, limited reports on confirmed cases of human salmonellosis were documented in Turkey.…”
