Effect of autologous stem cells on regenerated bone during distraction osteogenesis by Ilizarov technique in the radius of dogs: histomorphometric analysis

Abstract: PURPOSE:To investigate by histomorphometry the distraction osteogenesis by Ilizarov technique in dog radius with the use of autologous stem cells in regenerated bone. METHODS:Ten dogs (20 radiuses) underwent the osteotomy of 20% of extension of their radiuses, and osteogenic distraction using the Ilizarov technique after this procedure at rate of 1mm per day divided into 0.5mm every 12 hours. The elongation was performed until the regeneration reached 20% of the total length of the radius. The stem cells were … Show more

“…The use of stem cells is becoming increasingly important in veterinary medicine. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been shown to improve tissue repair in oral ulcers [ 1 , 2 ] and bone defects [ 3 6 ], as well as in dogs with osteoarthritis of the coxofemoral and elbow joint [ 7 – 10 ]. MSCs have also been used in canine central nervous system to treat spinal cord injury [ 11 14 ] and ischemic brain infarction [ 15 ].…”

“…Five serial sections from each leg and a minimum of five adjacent fields in each section were quantified at a magnification of ×40 objective lens. The thicknesses of the periosteum, number, thickness, and areas of trabeculae and cartilaginous new bone were evaluated histomorphometrically with a use of semiautomatic image analysis system (University of Texas Health Science Center at Santorino, TX, USA image tool for Windows version 1.28 program) as described by other authors [6,[21][22][23][24]. All of the measurements were made in a blinded manner by a histologist.…”
