An Open-Label, Nonplacebo-Controlled Study on Cistanche tubulosa Glycoside Capsules (Memoregain®) for Treating Moderate Alzheimer’s Disease

Abstract: After Memoregain(®) treatment, patients with AD showed no obvious aggravation of cognitive function, independent living ability, and overall conditions but were stable throughout the study. Comparison with other long-term medications with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors suggests that Memoregain(®) has a potential to be a possible treatment option for mild to moderate AD. Large trials with bigger population are required to confirm.

“…This memory-improving effect is consistent with other reports showing that total phenylethanoid glycosides of Cistanche species could protect the impairment of inhibitory avoidance response caused by an acute intracisternal injection of Aβ 25-35 in mice [6]. Recent clinical report also indicated that AD patients given with CT glycosides for 48 weeks showed no exacerbation of cognitive function [21]. Moreover, CT extract at used dosage (100, 200 mg/kg) contained echinacoside (25.4, 50.8 mg), acteoside (3.8, 7.6 mg) and isoacteoside (4.1, 8.2 mg) according to quantity assay performed in this study.…”

“…CT is a potential anti-amnesic and anti-dementia plant based on our present data and other reports [6-8,21]. The contents of echinacoside and acteoside in this used dosage of CT extract is sufficient to produce memory-improving effects in SAMP/8 mice or scopolamine-induced amnesia [11,12].…”

“…Cistanche supplementation was also found to be well tolerated, with all adverse reactions being mild. 22 Panax ginseng P. ginseng is a popular herb that has been used in TCM for thousands of years, and is traditionally believed to support physical and mental vitality. Ginsenosides (a group of triterpene saponins extracted from the plant's root) are considered some of the major medicinal constituents of ginseng.…”
