Re-Examination of the Genotoxic Activity of Water Taken From the Songhua River in P. R. China

Abstract: The Songhua River, in northeast China, has heavy organic contamination due to domestic sewage and industrial wastewater. Thus, it is important to further determine its genotoxic activity, which is a potential hazard for human health. Short-term genotoxic bioassays using Salmonella, the cytokinesis-block micronucleus cytome assay, and mouse liver cell comet assay were employed to further examine the genotoxic activity of diethyl ether extracts of water samples taken from the Songhua River. Ames test results sho… Show more

“…Water pollution leads to a number of deleterious effects on organisms living in its areas, as well as human health (Yu et al 2013). Among the lethal and sub-lethal effects caused by these complex mixtures in water, fertility problems as well as cellular, metabolic, and DNA damages are noteworthy (Bianchi et al 2011).…”

“…On November 13, 2005, the Songhua River in northeast China suffered a serious pollution by NB due to the explosion of a nearby factory, resulting in the NB concentrations in downstream were 30‐fold of the permissible limits for drinking water . After the passage of nearly 10 yr, the residual NB enriched in river sediments and in the aquatic organisms could now still exhibit genotoxicity impact on microbial communities .…”
