Effects of Quercetin Supplementation on Endurance Performance and Maximal Oxygen Consumption: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Lately, the effect of quercetin supplementation (QS) on endurance performance (EP) and maximal oxygen consumption (VO 2max ) has been receiving much scientific and media attention. Therefore, a meta-analysis was performed to determine QS's ergogenic value on these variables. Studies were located with database searches (PubMed and SPORTDiscus) and cross-referencing. Outcomes represent mean percentage changes in EP (measured via power output) and VO 2max between QS and placebo. Random-effects model meta-regressi… Show more

“…A much larger study might correct for these influences and reveal more significant changes. In light of the somewhat disparate findings on quercetin and exercise endurance/recovery, Pelletier et al . conducted a meta‐analysis of studies that examined the effect of quercetin supplementation on endurance performance and maximal oxygen consumption.…”

“…Currently, quercetin as aglycone is marketed as an ingredient of dietary supplements with different claims or purported benefits which are not within the focus of the present review and reviewed elsewhere . However, the European Commission did not authorize certain health claims, e.g., for protection of DNA, proteins, and lipids from oxidative damage for the general population .…”

“…Quercetin has been proposed as an ergogenic supplement for athletes because it may mimic training‐induced mitochondrial biogenesis in skeletal muscle (Davis et al., ). Recent meta‐analyses of the currently available literature have concluded that chronic quercetin supplementation appears to improve aerobic capacity and endurance performance, with significant differences seen in untrained populations, but not trained groups (Kressler et al., ; Pelletier et al., ). However, even when the effects are statistically significant, the magnitude of change is trivial to small and unlikely to have real‐world significance (Pelletier et al., ).…”
