2‐Ethylhexanol Derivatives as Nonionic Surfactants: Synthesis and Properties

Abstract: The synthesis and basic properties of 2-ethylhexanol based innovative nonionic surfactants are described in this paper. 2-Ethylhexanol as an available and relatively inexpensive raw material was used as the hydrophobe source modified by propoxylation and followed by polyethoxylation. As the result, six series of 2-ethylhexyl alcohol polyalkoxylates (EHPmEn) were obtained with three steps of propoxylation, each followed by polyethoxylation and two series only with polyethoxylation (EHEn). Two different catalyst… Show more

“…On the other hand, many fats and oils are used to produce customized products, which are useful for synthesis of environmentally friendly and new compounds [18,19]. Surface active agents are compounds containing hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups, which lead to an increase in solubility, moisturizing, foam, and other surface properties, making them possess many applications from consumer to industrial materials such as toiletries, emulsifiers, cleaning detergents, cosmetic agents, and antistatic [20][21][22][23]. Many surface active agents containing heterocyclic anomalies are extensive biological activity, which can be introduced in important industries [24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31].…”

“…The global production of surfactants has reached several million tons per year. Therefore, the impact of new surfactants on human health and the environment must be investigated (Hreczuch, Dąbrowska, Chruściel, Sznajdrowska, & Materna, ). Natural surface‐active agents are environmentally friendly, especially in some fields such as petroleum engineering and commodity industry.…”
