Is it beneficial for municipalities to cooperate or compete with one another to attract visitors? The myopic rationality of game theory favors competition for short-term gains, whereas the nonmyopic theory of moves suggests that cooperation in this regard might be more farsighted, consensual, inclusive, and sustainable. To understand why popular cities switched to cooperation when faced with the crisis of overtourism, even though the players’ preferences about the outcomes did not change, we analyzed the case study of Amsterdam. The results indicate that the theories are appropriate in different situations. Thus, the theory of moves’ rules—alternating choices, thinking ahead in making choices—are more appropriate to finding a solution that would be stable in the future, not just one that is myopically stable in the present. We conclude that cooperation remains a more beneficial approach to managing tourism even in periods of undertourism. Policy directions are provided.

Attitudes of Local Population Towards the Impacts of Tourism Development: Evidence From Czechia

Increasing the socio-economic effects caused by the tourism development in the local population, they adopt some attitudes according to the impacts directly or indirectly perceived. However, some of this impact can be considered positive or negative, according to different perspectives. The issue of the resident-tourist relationship has been much-discussed recently. Therefore, many case studies are being conducted that address the impacts on both residents and tourists. The goal of this manuscript is to analyze the attitudes of local residents to the development of tourism in the urban monument zone Předhradí. Primary data were collected in a questionnaire survey for residents who have a permanent residence in a municipality of Předhradí in 2020. In our research, we tried to identify the significant negative impacts of tourism development. In the same way, we evaluate how the locals see positive effects on their quality of life conducted with tourism development. The research finds out that local respondents perceived some negative impacts to increase the economic perspective, as they referred to in the higher traffic load or increased noise. The pandemic crises are perceived as a game-changer in the tourism industry. For that reason, we suggest the primary considerations for future research not only with the academic perfective as for the practical point of view. The local population’s entrepreneurship attitudes must be one of the tools to assume the resilience toward the tourism development impacts.

Air transport and tourism flows to islands: A panel analysis for southern European countries

Air transport is an essential component of the tourism industry, and the number, frequency, and capacity of flight connections may influence the level of tourism demand, especially for island destinations. This paper evaluates the influence of air transport on tourism arrivals to selected islands in seven southern European Union countries to determine the nature of the relationship between tourist arrivals and air transport, specifically, whether air transport services generate tourism demand or merely enable touristic flows. The paper uses panel data and applies an econometric model with justifications for endogeneity and dynamic issues. Results show a moderate impact of transport infrastructures on generating additional tourist arrivals; however, the model shows that air transport is a prerequisite to developing tourism demand and is not the only determinant in increasing tourist arrivals. Tourist arrivals appear more a determinant than a consequence of changes in-flight connections.
