Colorimetric Detection of Glucose in Biological Fluids Using Toner-Based Microzone Plates

Abstract: This report describes the use of toner-based microzone plates for quantitative determination of glucose in artificial urine and human serum samples using colorimetric detection. The proposed approach has exhibited a linear response for glucose concentration levels from 0 to 10 mmol L , respectively. The glucose analysis in artificial serum samples revealed error lower than 5% in comparison with certified values provided by the supplier. Lastly, the proposed approach has also provided suitable accuracy (92-105%… Show more

“…The proposed device was utilized for the dynamic solid-phase extraction of DNA. The microfluidic devices prepared using laser printing process have shown great potential for various clinical assays including dengue diagnosis [68], detection and quantification of glucose in biological samples [69], and PCR amplification of DNA [70]. A toner-based microfluidic device was demonstrated to accurately perform simultaneous detection and quantification of multiple analytes including total proteins, glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides in biological fluids [71].…”

“…In summary, the monitoring of acid–base titrations on paper platforms with a smartphone equipped with a free App showed instrumental and operational simplicity, low cost, and extremely attractive benefits for the environment. Analytical information about the color intensity can be achieved in real-time, thus reducing the analysis time associated with the image processing and pixel’s intensity on similar platforms using scanner as detector [ 32 ]. The required volume of samples and reagents was ca.…”

“…This research field starts to prosper from 2014 until the current time. In 2017, colorimetric detection was performed for glucose samples with tonerbased microzone plates without a "reliable" smartphone [9]. Due to the vast studies reported in the literature, we will focus on the past two years to show a glance at both microfluidics and colorimetric approach.…”
