The objective of this study was to determine the use efficiency intercepted photosynthetically active solar radiation of Hovenia dulcis seedlings grown under different plant density treatments. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the forestry nursery. A complete randomized block design was applied. The study was characterized by two plant densities; high (494 plants m -2 ) and medium (247 plants m -2 ) densities of seedling in the trays, and fifteen evaluation periods that began after first emergence. Evaluations were carried out every 15 days, totaling 210 days, with six replications. The leaf area index, total dry biomass of seedlings, partitioning of dry biomass, interception of global radiation, accumulated intercepted photosynthetically active radiation, and use efficiency of radiation were evaluated. The high density treatments promoted greater use efficiency and accumulation of intercepted photosynthetically active radiation in dry biomass of Hovenia dulcis seedlings. In this work, a model is present for analyzing the growth and development of plants and their relation to both photosynthetic rate and radiation use efficiency.

RESUMO.Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito do teste de envelhecimento acelerado e de condições de armazenamento na qualidade fisiológica de sementes de Hovenia dulcis. O teste de envelhecimento acelerado foi realizado com seis tempos (0, 24, 48, 72, 96 e 120 horas) e quatro repetições. O armazenamento foi estudado num esquema fatorial 2 x 7, sendo um fator a condição de armazenamento (ambiente de laboratório e geladeira) e o outro fator, o tempo de armazenamento (0, 8, 16, 24, 32, 40 e 48 semanas), com quatro repetições. O envelhecimento acelerado foi realizado à temperatura de 45°C e as sementes foram armazenadas ao ambiente e em geladeira, à temperatura de 4 a 7°C e umidade relativa do ar de 40 a 50%, ambos no escuro. As variáveis analisadas foram a germinação,o índice de velocidade de germinação, o tempo médio de germinação, a velocidade média de germinação e a entropia. O envelhecimento acelerado por até 120 horas proporcionou aumento na qualidade fisiológica de sementes de uva-do-japão. As sementes de uva-do-japão podem ser armazenadas por até 40 semanas em ambiente. Palavras-chave: Hovenia dulcis, entropia, germinação.ABSTRACT. Physiological quality of Hovenia dulcis seeds after accelerated aging and storage. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of accelerated aging and storage conditions on the physiological quality of Hovenia dulcis seeds. Six accelerated aging times (0, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours) were evaluated with four replications. The storage was studied in a 2 x 7 factorial scheme, with two storage conditions (laboratory room and refrigerator) and seven storage times (0, 8, 16, 24, 32, 40 and 48 weeks), with four replications. The accelerated aging was performed at 45°C, and the storage was done in the laboratory room and in the refrigerator at 4 to 7°C and relative humidity of 40 to 50%, both in darkness. The analyzed variables were: germination percentage, germination velocity index (GVI), average germination time (AGT), average germination velocity (AGV) and entropy. The accelerated aging until 120 hours increased the physiological quality of Hovenia dulcis seeds. The storage of seeds for up to 40 weeks can be done in the laboratory room.

Hovenia dulcis is a pioneering species, fast growing and considered exotic and invasive. The species has multiplicity of uses and reproduces by seeds. In this sense, it is extremely important to know the physiological maturity of H. dulcis seeds. The objective of the research was to determine if the maturation of H. dulcis seeds is achieved concomitantly with the physiological maturation of the false fruit. Seeds were obtained from seven adult trees located in Marechal Cândido Rondon, PR. The fruits were classified in five maturation stages, determined according to color chart. In order to verify the effects of the maturation stages of the false fruit on the physiological maturity seeds biometric characteristics, moisture content, germination, vigor and seedling development were evaluated. Seeds of H. dulcis presented evolution of maturation at the same time as the false fruit. For the evaluated parameters, seeds classified as stage 1 (7.5 YR 5/8) showed the best results for seed germination and seedling development, in contrast to those classified as stage 5 (2.5 YR 3/4), which presented low germination and delay in the development of seeds and seedlings.
