Urban forests provide multiple benefits in improving people’s lives and can be an important tool for achieving the goal of carbon neutral cities. In this study, we analyzed the diversity of plant species from urban forests in cities in the Brazilian Amazonia, based on data from scientific articles, through a systematic literature review. Our analysis revealed that 530 taxa, of which 479 were identified at the species level and 51 at the genus level, covering 38,882 individuals were distributed in 29 cities. The three most frequent species were Ficus benjamina, Mangifera indica, and Licania tomentosa. Exotic species were more frequent than native. The three most frequent species had almost 42% of the inventoried individuals. The choice of species has been made mainly by the local population, without monitoring by the public authorities. Recommendations for sustainable management of urban forests in Amazonia include investing in training of management bodies, periodic inventories, and awareness actions about the benefits of urban green infrastructure and on the advantages of native species. Policies for the sustainable management of urban green areas are necessary. The municipal governments must continuously monitor indicators of urban ecosystem services and provide financial resources for maintaining and increasing those area rates per person.

“…In our study it was possible to evidence that there was an equilibrium regarding the presence of individuals from the Fabaceae family, with 5 of them being classified as native and 5 as exotic species. Trees from the Fabaceae family are commonly utilized in urban forests in Brazilian cities (Fernandes et al, 2018;Silva et al, 2019;Toledo et al, 2021). Among the reasons for the wide use of species from the Fabaceae family are: the canopy architecture (shade from the tree), the presence of colorful inflorescences, aesthetic beauty, and easy seed dispersal, which increase the spontaneous emergence of new individuals, as well as the use of those trees by local inhabitants of a given area, which also increases the seedling of new individuals (Cabreira and Canto-Dorow, 2016).…”

Biodiverse neighborhoods: an ex-situ conservation tool

Urban forests are responsible for a lot of benefits, and can be used as a tool to ex-situ conservation of native species. Our study investigated a public urban forest aiming to provide subside to management projects in order to allow the accurate fulfillment of social, aesthetic and ecological functions displayed by trees. Our survey was conducted in 6 public squares and 5 gardens in the Jardins neighborhood. We classified the trees according to their phytogeographic origins and seed dispersal habit. The Shannon-Weaver (H’) index, Simpson’s dominance (D’) and Pielou’s equability (J) were determined. A total of 507 individuals were sampled, located in 12 botanical families and 29 species, and 13 of them were classified as native and 16 as exotic. The family with higher species richness and number of species was Fabaceae (36%). Regarding the seed dispersal syndrome, the most representative was zoochory (52%). The ecological index showed medium species diversity (H’=2.2284), high dominance (D’=0.7899) and medium number of individuals (J) 0.6552. Although the Jardins neighborhood was planned, the urban forest in this area still needs improvement; such as incentive measures that can promote biodiversity and the application of ex-situ conservation.

A arborização urbana favorece a qualidade ambiental proporcionando diversos benefícios como o bem-estar, o controle da poluição do ar, o conforto térmico, o abrigo à fauna, o estímulo às práticas esportivas, entre tantos outros. Este trabalho teve como objetivo mapear e quantificar a área coberta por arborização de ruas na cidade de Alegre, Espírito Santo, Brasil. Foram mapeadas, por meio da técnica da fotointerpretação, todas as copas das árvores existentes nos bairros da cidade. O programa computacional utilizado foi o QGIS, versão 3.4.5, e as bases cartográficas foram as ortofotos da região, que possuem resolução espacial de 0,25 m, referentes ao ano de 2015/2017. Verificou-se que a cidade de Alegre possui 32.622,17 m² de área coberta com arborização de ruas, o que representa 0,58% da área total da cidade. Os bairros que apresentam maior porcentagem de cobertura de copa pela arborização de ruas por área são: Centro (2,36%), Nova Alegre (2,14%), Universitário (1,87%); e os que apresentam o menor percentual são: Pavuna (0,18%), Charqueada (0,16%) e Treze de Maio (0,11). O trabalho contribui para o conhecimento da arborização urbana da cidade, podendo ser utilizado em futuros estudos de planejamento e gestão urbana.
