The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the roughness, wettability and the surface color of Ficus sp. genus before and after the process of manual sanding and application of a finishing product (stain). The roughness and color were determined before and after the sanding process and after applying the stain using Surftest SJ 400 Mitutoyo and ColorEye XTH spectrophotometer. The wettability was evaluated by measuring the contact angle between the water drop and the surface of the veneers, using a goniometer Krüss DSA30. The roughness of the veneers, subjected to 180, 240, and 320 sandpaper, decreased after the sanding process and remarkably after stain application. The contact angle was over 90° for all treated samples. Regarding the colorimetry, there was a decrease in L* average values after sanding. After applying the stain, there was a change in color of the wood, from grayish-white to yellow-olive.

The effect of applying cetol and finishing varnish products and sanding on the surface roughness and colour of marupa (Simarouba amara) wood was evaluated. Three coats of each product were applied and two sandpaper grits were used, 280 and 320). The analyzes were performed on untreated samples and between each coat of products in order to analyze the effect of sanding, the products and the number of coats. According to colorimetry, the L* value for the control treatment was 82,83 and the treatments reduced the L* to 61,70 on average for the cetol treatment and 77,09 for the varnish treatment, showing that the cetol darkened the wood more than the varnish. The yellowish and reddish pigmentations became more intense according to the positive values of Δa* and Δb*, especially after applying the cetol. The total colour variation ΔE average was 40,79 for the cetol treatment and 9,83 for the varnish treatment, confirming a much more significant colour change in the cetol treatment. Sanding with different grits did not significantly alter the surface colour. The product application made the wood surface smoother, and was noticeable from the second coat. Sanding reduced roughness on the wood surface, but the finishing product was the largest source of variation.

Os estudos de caracterização da madeira permitem a sua otimização nos diversos segmentos madeireiros, principalmente o beneficiamento da madeira. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo caracterizar as propriedades da madeira de Cordia glabrata (louro-preto), visando aumentar o conhecimento a respeito do potencial de espécies madeireiras menos tradicionais. Foi realizada a caracterização macroscópica e microscópica, análises químicas, físicas e avaliadas algumas propriedades mecânicas da madeira de C. glabrata. A madeira apresenta altos teores de lignina total, fibras longas e com espessura de parede média. Foi classificada como madeira de alta densidade e média estabilidade dimensional. A espécie também possui valores médios de resistência à compressão paralela e módulo de ruptura, altos valores de tensão de cisalhamento e valores considerados baixos pelos teste de fendilhamento. C. glabrata possui características adequadas para ser utilizada em diversas finalidades no setor madeireiro brasileiro, especialmente para o mercado de lâminas decorativas, pisos, em usos que requerem boa durabilidade natural e certa resistência mecânica.
