Effect of applying finishing products and sanding on the surface of marupa wood

Abstract: The effect of applying cetol and finishing varnish products and sanding on the surface roughness and colour of marupa (Simarouba amara) wood was evaluated. Three coats of each product were applied and two sandpaper grits were used, 280 and 320). The analyzes were performed on untreated samples and between each coat of products in order to analyze the effect of sanding, the products and the number of coats. According to colorimetry, the L* value for the control treatment was 82,83 and the treatments reduced the… Show more

“…2, dust extraction accounted for 75% of the average energy consumed in the various furniture manufacturing processes, with the abrasive sanding and wood coating sections registering higher energy consumption than the other operations. In fact, the energy demand for wood coating is significantly higher not only because of the higher total dust and particulate concentration, but also due to the need to ensure a higher pressure in the finishing-room to keep the air-borne dust particles away from this section (Gomez et al 2014;de Paula et al 2020).…”

“…Sanding is the most common method for wood surface machining before varnishing, which ensures sufficient smoothness before application of varnish materials [1,7,18]. Previous studies [13,14,19,20] have shown that higher surface roughness contributes to lowering the gloss of the coatings.…”

“…Marupá (Simarouba amara) is a pioneer species that belongs to the Simaroubaceae family and is naturally distributed throughout the Amazon, and the central-west and southwest of Brazil. The wood of this species is light or beigeyellow to cream, and it is used in the furniture industry and in the manufacture of toys, linings and boxes (PAULA et al, 2020). Waste from economic activities that Studies in Engineering and Exact Sciences, Curitiba, v.3, n.3, p. 455-471, jul./sep., 2022 involve both these species is already known to have potential for mushroom cultivation, which could help to reducing the amount of waste in landfills and could generate value-added products (AGUIAR et al, 2021;SALES-CAMPOS et al, 2021).…”
