The objective of this search was to quantify the genetic variability in progenies from grápia mother trees in natural populations, for initial growth characters of the seedlings. Seeds were collected from 13 mother trees, from four origins, located in the municipalities of Pareci Novo, São José do Sul and Aratiba in RS, and Seara in SC, as well as data from plants and place of origin. Biometrics were performed on 100 seeds lot from each mother tree, and an experiment was installed to evaluate progenies in a completely randomized design. It was evaluated the seedling emergence speed and the emergence percentage, the stem diameter and seedlings height, as well as the final survival percentage. A significative difference was found for all variables observed for seeds and seedlings of grápia mother trees. Seed length and width demonstrated high values for individual heritability in the narrow sense (above 0.6), being possible to use the seed size for an analysis of genetic variability between plants of the species, but not as an indicative variable of physiological quality and vigor. The correlation analysis indicated that the seedling emergence percentage is related to the characteristics of the mother plant plant (height and diameter). Thus, the use of seedlings for forest restoration areas is appropriate, as they have indications of genetic diversity.

The technique of magnetizing irrigation water has been successfully adopted for producing seedlings of different varieties; however, in addition to the agronomic benefits, analyzing the economic viability is an important indicator affecting the producer's decision in acquiring this technology. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of magnetic treatment of irrigation water on the growth and development of tomato seedlings, and its economic viability. Experiments I, II and III were treated with quality water (magnetized and non-magnetized) and different substrates. The application of magnetically treated water in the three experiments did not reduce any variables. Furthermore, magnetic treatment of irrigation water proved to be advantageous because it improved the final emergence percentage by 32.19% and 19.28% in experiments II and III, respectively. The growth of tomato seedlings was verified by the 53.97% increase in shoot dry matter in experiment II and by 29.77% increase in shoot fresh matter in experiment III. The seedlings that received magnetically treated water observed 14.61% increase in the speed of germination index in experiment I. Studying the economic viability revealed that using magnetizer to produce tomato seedlings was financially viable, as it reduced the discounted payback from 4.

Inappropriate disposal of sewage sludge has become an environmental problem. In some Brazilian states, such as São Paulo, in natura sewage sludge use is practically prohibited due to restrictive requirements by CONAMA Resolution No. 375/2006. Therefore, a very promising alternative to reuse this residue is to compost it with other materials and use it as a substrate in the production of seedlings. The objective of this study was to evaluate the development of the seedlings of Peltophorum dubium in compost with sewage sludge, to determine which frequency of irrigation would be more adequate according to the physical characteristics of each substrate, and if this would influence the morphological and nutritional variables of the seedlings. Two composts were produced: sewage sludge composted with sugarcane bagasse and sewage sludge composted with eucalyptus bark, both in 1: 1 proportion. Commercial substrate was used for control. This study was completely randomized in a 3x3 factorial design, which three substrates and three frequencies of irrigation were tested: two, three and four times per day. The evaluated parameters were: plant height, stem diameter ratio, shoot / root ratio, leaf dry mass, root dry mass, total dry mass, green color index, Dickson quality index (IQD), water loss through leaching and substrate water retain capacity. The best results were observed in the seedlings produced in sewage sludge compound with eucalyptus bark submitted to the frequencies of two or three times a day.
