Translation into Portuguese and validation of the Blood Donation Reactions Inventory

Abstract: Backgroundthe Blood Donation Reactions Inventory (BDRI) scale was proposed as part of a study about the predictors of psychological reactions in volunteer blood donors, as uncomfortable reactions are associated with a lower probability to return for further donations.Objectiveto translate the Inventory into Brazilian Portuguese and evaluate its psychometric properties (validity and reliability). The inventory has 11 items, but the literature suggests that shorter inventories, of four or six items, should be us… Show more

“…However it falls within the usual prevalence of 0.3-4% in various studies. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Every study [11][12][13][14] showed vasovagal reactions to be more frequent than local complications (70-90%) similar to ours (91%). The finding of pre-syncopal symptoms higher than actual syncope / fainting was also comparable with other studies.…”

“…Systemic symptoms of vasovagal nature formed the bulk of donor reactions, of which presyncopal was recorded at 1.33% and true syncope at 0.3%. The overall rate of ADR [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] is slightly more compared to international studies like Garozzo et al 13 (0.59%) and Crocco et al 13 where the rate was 1.2%, and less than studies in Indian population like Agnihotri N 6 where it was 2.5%. However it falls within the usual prevalence of 0.3-4% in various studies.…”

“…The response of the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system implies the need for vascular regulation, as it causes reduced peripheral vascular resistance and heart rate, leading to a reduction in systemic blood pressure and cardiac output, and a consequent reduction in oxygen and nutrient supply (constituting a need for oxygenation and nutrition) to cerebral and peripheral tissues; this reduction is evidenced by dizziness and pallor. Thus, due to a reduction in self-perception and of the surrounding environment being experienced according to reports of dizziness and sometimes "darkened vision" (24) , an imbalance in the need for cerebral oxygenation is also manifested. Therefore, the need for physical integrity is inevitably vulnerable, considering visual changes and dizziness due to reduced cerebral perfusion.…”

“…Of note, the lack of consistent reporting practices based on common definitions across Brazilian blood banks may contribute to the different rates reported over the country. 8 In this issue of the Revista Brasileira de Hematologia e Hemoterapia, Braz et al 9 present the translation into Brazilian Portuguese and the validation of The Blood Donation Reactions Inventory (BDRI). The BDRI provides an assessment of subjective ratings of presyncopal symptoms that is brief and easily understood by donors, and quick to administer and score.10 The BDRI has 11 items in its full scale, while short scales have 6 or 4 items.…”
