Effect of the addition of the antioxidant taurine on the complete blood count of whole blood stored at room temperature and at 4°C for up to 7 days

Abstract: BackgroundThe complete blood count is one of the most common routine tests. This study aimed to evaluate possible effects of the antioxidant taurine on the complete blood count of whole blood stored at room temperature and at 4ºC over seven days. MethodsVenous blood samples of 25 healthy males were distributed into two sets of tubes with each set of four tubes containing 50 µL of solutions with zero, 2.5 g/L, 5 g/L, 10 g/L taurine. The tubes were kept at room temperature or at 4ºC. Complete blood counts were p… Show more

“…Circulating blood cells are comprised of red blood cells (RBCs, erythrocytes), platelets (PLTs, thrombocytes), and white blood cells (WBCs, leukocytes), which are components of the immune system that protect the body. The complete blood count (CBC) is one of the most common diagnostic tests performed [Sirdah et al, ]. RBCs contain hemoglobin (Hb) and carry oxygen to the body.…”

“…Centralized haematology laboratories in the local health district hospitals in the era of new public health initiatives have adopted a single platform approach in providing standard services . Central laboratories provide the back up support to the network laboratories and now test specimens that have been dispatched over long distance; as a result, testing is often delayed by hours . When such specimens arrive after significant delay and under poor storage conditions, the results obtained from these specimens may lead to erroneous results without comments appended to the reported results regarding the reliability or limitations of analysis .…”

“…The oxidation of fatty acids ultimately compromises the stability of the erythrocytes' membrane and eventually impairs their activity [152][153][154]. Interestingly, TAU is an excellent membrane stabilizer [130,149,[155][156][157]. It has repeatedly been mentioned that TAU protects biomembrane lipids from oxidation and consequently prevents cell damage [130,149,[155][156][157].…”

It has repeatedly been mentioned that TAU protects biomembrane lipids from oxidation and consequently prevents cell damage [130,149,[155][156][157]. Huxtable et al mentioned that inhibiting lipid peroxidation, stabilization of biological membranes, TAU antioxidant properties, and maintaining intracellular ions' homeostasis play a crucial role in preserving cellular integrity and preventing their damage [23].…”
