Neck circumference as a discriminator of obesity in older women enrolled in a physical activity program

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate neck circumference (NC) as a discriminator of overweight and obesity and to establish cut-off points for physically active older women. The sample consisted of 170 older women (69.5 ± 6.8 years) practicing physical activity. Anthropometric measures (body weight, height, waist circumference – WC, and NC) were obtained and the body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Correlation analysis was performed and ROC curves were constructed. NC was significantly correlated with BMI (rh… Show more

“…Studies followed a cross-sectional, case-control and cohort design. Most of the articles were from Brazil (19) 30 35 , 37 45 , 48 – 51 while the others were from Chile (3) 29 , 36 , 46 and Peru (1) 47 . The instrument and methodology to measure NC was reported in 19 studies ( Table 2 ) 29 , 31 34 , 36 , 37 , 39 46 , 48 , 49 – 51 .…”

“…Of all the articles with captive populations, 4 of these included elderly people 39 , 42 , 44 , 45 and also reported the mean NC. The minimum and maximum mean NC in this captive population were 34.60cm and 36.94cm, respectively; in men were 39.19cm and 40.20cm, respectively; and in women the minimum and maximum values were 33.50cm and 36.38cm, respectively ( Table 2 ).…”

“…In Pakistan, a study conducted with university students between 18 and 20 years of age, the correlation between NC and BMI was strong in both men and women (r = 0.86; r = 0.70, respectively) [14]. In a study conducted in older adult Brazilian women, NC showed a moderate correlation with BMI (r = 0.67) and also with WC (r = 0.56) [24]. It is worth mentioning that the differences in the correlations found between NC, WC, and BMI compared to studies from Asian countries may be because the height and, in general, the body morphology in these populations are different.…”
