O “Timed Up and Go” na previsão e explicação de quedas em idosos praticantes de exercícios físicos

Abstract: -The classic and cognitive "Timed Up and Go" tests (TUG) are used to identify old people prone to falls, but we were unable to find studies that prove their association in old people practicing physical exercise. The objective of this study was to analyze the classic and cognitive versions of TUG in forecasting and explaining the occurrence of falls in old people practicing physical exercise. Participants included 82 physically active old people. Data were collected on the occurrence of falls in the past 12 mo… Show more

“…Each task is graded according to the performance on a 3-level ordinal scale (0-2), and the maximum score is 28 points in case of normal performance. 32 • Timed Up and Go Test (TUG test): evaluates mobility and balance, calculating the time that a person takes to rise from an armchair, walk three meters, turn around, walk back, and sit down in the chair.…”

“…TUG tests with such covariates (a secondary task) like a cognitive task and TUG with a manual task like physical exercises have been evaluated by different authors. Virtuoso et al (2014) performed a study with 82 physically active old people over 12 months and achieved an AUC of 65.3 and 58.1 with the cognitive TUG test for predicting the occurrence of falls. While Cardon-Verbecq et al (2017) also did not find an improved predictive ability in a study with 157 participants, and Sailer (2016) did not find the cognitive TUG to be an effective measure of fall risk in 14 participants.…”

“…The elderly was instructed to use normal footwear, walking cane or another accessory. In TUG motor, could not to talk in the test and TUG cognitive should to talk during the test the names of animals 8 , after the verbal command "go", and the time was measured in seconds 7 . The cut-off point for TUG-motor and TUG-cognitive was value up to 10 seconds is considered normal, from 10.01 to 20 seconds with compromised performance and over 20.01 seconds with higher risk of falls elderly 7 .…”

“…In the study by Bohannon et al 7 , the TUG test measurement was stratified into three age groups as follows: 60-69 years with normative values of 8.1 (7.1-9.0) seconds, 70-79 years, with values of 9.2 (9.8-10.0) seconds, and 80-89 years with 11.3 (10.2-12.7) seconds. The TUG cognitive 8 that evaluates verbal fluency and verifies the cognitive capacity combined with the motor demand related to the performance of elderly people.…”
