Natural and synthetic pigments in diet of Japanese quails

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate productive performance and egg quality of Japanese quails (Cortunix japonica) fed with synthetic and natural pigments. The treatments used were: 0.8% paprika extract (Capsicum annuum), 0.8% marigold flower extract, 4% paprika extract and 4% marigold flower extract and 0.045% synthetic pigment (Canthaxanthin) in feed. A total of 240 Japanese quails at 20 weeks of age were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design with five treatments and six replicate… Show more

“…However, regardless of the inclusion level, no improvement in egg yolk color was observed. Our outcomes disagree with Valentim et al (2020) which reported that the addition of pigments from plant extracts containing carotenoid in the feed for quail improves the yolk color.…”

“…Several studies (BITTENCOURT et al, 2019;SILVA et al, 2019;VALENTIM et al, 2020) report the effectiveness of alternative pigmenting sources to those commonly used (FASSANI et al, 2019). However, the inclusion of PPF may not have been enough to demonstrate its action.…”

“…According to Valentim et al (2020), the ideal average egg weight of Japanese quail eggs is 10 g, similar as that found in the treatments control and calcium carbonate in the present study. However, the treatments with Fertsigo® and Ovosigo® reached values above the reference ones.…”

“…Adding plant extracts pigments in quails' feed did not change egg quality but improves yolk color due to the higher deposition of carotenoid pigments (Valentim et al, 2020). What may be correlated with egg weight, which was also higher in these same treatments.…”
