Feeding behavior of sheep fed sugarcane silage enriched with detoxified castor bean meal

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the feeding behavior of sheep fed sugarcane silage enriched with increasing levels of detoxified castor bean meal. Twenty-four non-castrated male Santa Inês sheep with an average body weight of 25.34 kg and four months of age, were distributed in four treatments - 0, 7, 14 and 21% of the natural matter of detoxified castor bean meal in sugarcane silage. There was a linear increase (p < 0.05) in time spent eating and feeding and rumination efficiency (g MS and NDF/h) wit… Show more

“…However, supplementation with cottonseed cake and coconut meal needs to be used with caution as it may decrease animal performance variables ( 78 , 79 ). Castor meal and licuri cake are also by-products with the potential to be used as a protein source ( 80 , 81 ). On the other hand, sunflower meals did not show satisfactory results regarding performance and other characteristics as a protein alternative ( 82 ).…”

“…However, the daily harvesting and processing of sugar cane to feed large herds requires a lot of labor, which makes production costly, and the management of the sugarcane crop is hampered by both irregular regrowth and due to planting difficulties (Zulu et al., 2019). Thus, the conservation of this forage via silage concentrates the cutting activities in a single period, favors the food management of the animals, and promotes greater longevity of the sugarcane culture (A. Oliveira et al., 2019).…”

“…In this scenario, castor-bean (Ricinus communis L.) meal is a by-product with potential for use in ruminant diets after detoxification (Antunes et al, 2019). The detoxified castor-bean meal (DCM) presents 903 ± 13 g kg -1 DM; 320 ± 58 g kg -1 crude protein; 20 ± 2 g kg -1 ethereal extract; 383 ± 33 g kg -1 neutral detergent fiber; 62 ± 37 g kg -1 non-fibrous carbohydrates (Oliveira et al, 2019;Lima et al, 2020;Araújo et al, 2021). However, most research with DCM in ruminant feeding is conducted in feedlots (Diniz et al, 2011;Gionbelli et al, 2014;Novaes et al, 2020), and little is known about the effects of this ingredient on the production performance of grazing animals, especially beef cattle.…”
