Ovicidal effect of the essential oils from 18 Brazilian Piper species: controlling Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera, Erebidae) at the initial stage of development

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The toxicities of essential oils (EOs) from 18 species of Brazilian Piperaceae were assessed on eggs of the velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis. Oils were extracted using steam distillation, and dilutions were made for bioassays at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0%. All EOs reduced larval hatching. The lowest lethal concentrations were obtained from Piper fuligineum (SP), Piper mollicomum "chemotype 1" (SP), Piper mosenii (PR), Piper aduncum (PA) and Piper marginatum (PA). Ovi… Show more

“…The soybean caterpillar Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) is the main defoliation pest of soybeans that can cause 100% of leaf loss (da Silva‐Júnior et al, 2020; Moscardi et al, 2012). The economic loss in soybean crops caused by the Lepidoptera insect A. gemmatalis has encouraged the search for strategies of pest control that are currently based on synthetic insecticides (Bueno, Carvalho, Santos, Sosa‐Gómez, & Silva, 2017; Krinski, Foerster, & Deschamps, 2018). However, new approaches are needed to reduce risks to the environment and natural enemies, and to avoid or delay the onset of insecticide resistance.…”

“…However, new approaches are needed to reduce risks to the environment and natural enemies, and to avoid or delay the onset of insecticide resistance. The use of plant‐based insecticides is an alternative for the control of lepidopteran pests, as they have low toxicity and short persistence in the environment (Gupta & Dikshit, 2010; Krinski et al, 2018). In this context, ApTI may be a promising alternative for the control of A. gemmatalis due to its inhibitory activity against serine proteases (trypsins and chymotrypsins) and cysteine proteases (papain) from insects.…”

“…In this sense, PIs can serve as pest control agents, either in the pulverized form or in transgenic plants that highly express these PIs (Meriño‐Cabrera et al, ; Pilon et al, ). Taking into account that the need for more appropriate formulations has raised the cost of agrochemicals over the years, interest in research into ecologically sound pesticides has increased (Krinski, Foerster, & Deschamps, ). This alternative method is cheaper in application, more specific, less polluting, and has a long shelf life because it is more difficult for a pest to become resistant (Pilon et al, ).…”

“…Currently, the control of agricultural pests tends towards reducing the use of agrochemicals due to their harmful effects on the environment and human health, being replaced by bioinsecticides that consider economic and ecological aspects (Chandler et al, ). Among the alternatives for the use of agrochemicals, the use of PI has been highlighted (Ferreira et al, ; Krinski et al, ).…”
