<b>Impact of humic substances and nitrogen fertilising on the fruit quality and yield of custard apple

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The custard apple (Annona squamosa L.), also known as the sugar apple, is a fruit species native to Brazil that has been poorly studied, especially in relation to the effect of humic substances on its fruit quality and yield. An experiment was conducted from December 2010 to November 2011 to evaluate the fruit quality and yield of the custard apple as a function of nitrogen fertilising and the use of humic substances. The experimental design consisted of randomised blocks, with treatments distributed… Show more

“…Despite the low yield obtained during the 2014 season, the observed mean yield in our experiment was greater than those reported in the literature: 3.2 Mg • ha -1 (Kavati, 1997), 6.05 Mg • ha -1 (Kavati and Piza, 1997), 5 Mg • ha -1 (Costa et al, 2002), and 6.98 Mg • ha -1 (Patel et al, 2010) without humic substances; and 7.61 Mg • ha -1 with humic substances (Cunha et al, 2015).…”

“…The remainder is lost by leaching, especially in sandy soils (PRASAD et al, 2015), so it may contaminate water sources and groundwater (NOWAKI et al, 2017). Cunha et al (2015) point out that the use of soil conditioners to increase the efficiency in the absorption of nutrients, especially N, has been widely studied, and an alternative is the use of humic substances (HS). HS are formed by the transformation of biomolecules in the decomposition of soil organic matter, with a widely recognized influence on the chemical, physical and biological properties of the soil and, consequently, on root growth, increase of nutrient absorption and biosynthesis of chlorophylls (FERRARA; BRUNETTI, 2008).…”

“…When evaluating the effect of HS application and N fertilization on sugar-apple fruit quality and yield, Cunha et al (2015) observed that, in plants that received HS, the contents of soluble solids (SS) in the fruits increased by approximately 2.8% after using 0 to 100 g of N per plant and decreased by 6.25% after using 100 to 250 g of N per plant, while the use of HS caused an exponential increase in the SS/TA ratio as the N levels increased.…”

“…Despite the exploration of custard, as well as other Annonacea of economic importance which are not new in Brazil, information regarding the nutritional requirements is scarce (MALAVOLTA et al, 1997;MARSCHENER, 1997;DECHEN;NACHTIGALL, 2006;CAVALCANTe et al, 2012;CAVALCANTE et al, 2014;CUNHA et al, 2015). The works of greatest importance, involving nutrition, are old (SADHU; GHOSH, 1976).…”
