Public health-related misinformation spread rapidly in online networks, particularly, in social media during any disease outbreak. Misinformation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) drug protocol or presentation of its treatment from untrusted sources have shown dramatic consequences on public health. Authorities are utilizing several surveillance tools to detect, and slow down the rapid misinformation spread online, still millions of misinformation are found online. However, there is no currently available tool for receiving real-time misinformation notification during online health or COVID-19 related inquiries. Our proposed novel combinational approach, where we have integrated machine learning techniques with novel search engine misinformation notifier extension (SEMiNExt), helps to understand which news or information is from unreliable sources in real-time. The extension filters the search results and shows notification beforehand; it is a new and unexplored approach to prevent the spread of misinformation. To validate the user query, SEMiNExt transfers the data to a machine learning algorithm or classifier which predicts the authenticity of the search inquiry and sends a binary decision as either true or false. The results show that the supervised learning algorithm works best when 80% of the data set have been used for training purpose. Also, 10-fold cross-validation demonstrate a maximum accuracy and F1-score of 84.3% and 84.1% respectively for the Decision Tree classifier while the K-nearest-neighbor (KNN) algorithm shows the least performance. The SEMiNExt approach has introduced the possibility to improve online health communication system by showing misinformation notifications in real-time which enables safer web-based searching while inquiring on health-related issues.

A disseminação de notícias falsas representa risco para a saúde das coletividades por suas potenciais implicações nas esferas socioeconômica, política e cultural. Esse estudo objetiva refletir sobre as implicações das notícias falsas para a saúde das populações. Trata-se de um trabalho de abordagem qualitativa e exploratória de revisão bibliográfica, que analisa fake news veiculadas nas mídias sociais entre março e maio de 2020. Assim, questiona-se: quais as possíveis implicações das fake news para a saúde das populações? Que efeitos sociopolíticos e econômicos existem na disseminação de fake news no campo da Saúde Pública? Existiriam intencionalidades por parte das autoridades públicas ao difudir fake news? Os resultados sugerem que os debates sobre fake news e saúde no contexto da pandemia da Covid-19 se constituem um paradigma atual. Os resultados apontam, ainda, que a falta de acesso à diversidade de fontes de informações confiáveis contribui para o aumento da vulnerabilidade em saúde.

In July 2020, Brazil has the world's second highest Covid-19 death toll. The COVID-19 pandemic is spreading fast in America. Since the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed, it took 114 days in Brazil (February 26-June 19) and 98 days in the USA (January 21-April 29) for the number of cases to reach more than 1,000,000. Parallel to the rapid growth of COVID-19 cases, there has been a progression in the number of scientific publications. Until June 2020, more than 25,800 papers about COVID-19 were published in PubMed (17,800 open access-69%). This volume of scientific publications is unprecedent. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), for example, received more than 11,000 submissions from January 1 to June 1, 2020, compared with approximately 4,000 submissions during the same period in 2019. 1 The International Journal of Cardiovascular Sciences is facing a similar situation with more than doubled manuscripts submitted. Our aim is to discuss the importance of Open Science during the COVID-19 pandemic and the role of cardiology journals in this special moment.
