Introduction: Paediatric intensive care units have made important advances in technology and assistance since the 1980s, which have made more favourable the prognosis of critically ill children all over the world. Objective: Identify the epidemiological profile and clinical outcomes of hospitalised children and adolescents in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit of Hospital Vitória, Espirito Santo, Brazil. Methods: A descriptive and retrospective study carried out in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit of Hospital Infantil Nossa Senhora da Glória in the city of Vitória, Espirito Santo, Brazil. Age, sex, hospitalisation diagnosis, progression to discharge/death, and length of hospital admission were obtained from the Sector of Medical and Hospital Statistics Files between 2011 and 2012. For the descriptive analysis, categorical variables were expressed as absolute and percentage, and the continuous variables in average and standard deviation. For comparison, Pearson's chi-squared tests, Fisher's test, and Student's t test were used and p values <0.05 with confidence interval of 95% were considered statistically significant. Results: Of the 609 patients analysed, 342 (56.2%) were male (mean age: 72.7 ± 71.3 months). Respiratory disease, postoperative processes, and trauma were the main causes of hospitalisation. The average duration of hospitalization was 6.9 ± 5.5 days; 514 (84.4%) patients were discharged, 95 (15.6%) died, and of those, 53 (55.7%) died in less than 72 hours of hospitalisation. Conclusion: Most of the patients were less than 2 years of age. The leading causes of hospitalisation were respiratory disease (pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and asthma), sepsis, and head injury, which was the major cause of the trauma motivated by violence. The average hospital admission in the unit was one week and the mortality rate was 15.6%, with one third of the deaths recorded in the first 72 hours of hospitalisation.

INTRODUÇÃO: O desenvolvimento de alterações funcionais é comum em crianças que estiveram em condições de terapia intensiva. A Functional Status Scale (FSS) é uma escala que tem por objetivo avaliar a funcionalidade de pacientes pediátricos hospitalizados. OBJETIVO: Verificar a possível correlação de fatores sociodemográficos e clínicos com as alterações funcionais de crianças submetidas à internação na UTIP. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Estudo coorte com crianças admitidas em uma UTIP. A funcionalidade foi avaliada pelo FSS na admissão e na alta da unidade. Nova incapacidade foi definida como mudança no FSS ≥ 1 e incapacidade grave como mudança no FSS ≥ 3. O dados foram avaliados pelo programa SPSS versão 17.0. O teste de Pearson e Spearman foi empregado para análise de correlação. O nível de significância estatística adotada foi de p < 0,05. RESULTADOS: Participaram do estudo 43 crianças, sendo 51,2% do sexo masculino, com mediana de idade de 15 (1-144) meses. O principal motivo de internação foi desconforto respiratório 12 (27,9%) e a comorbidade prévia mais frequente foi a neurológica (37,3%), seguida de cardiovascular (11,8%). Foram observadas correlações significativas entre nova incapacidade e doença vascular prévia (p<0,000); nova incapacidade e internamento por alteração vascular (p<0,000) e incapacidade grave e doença cardiovascular prévia (p=0,005). CONCLUSÃO: O desenvolvimento de alterações funcionais pode ocorrer em crianças após internação na UTIP. A presença prévia de doença vascular e doença cardíaca, além do internamento por alteração vascular, estão associados a uma piora funcional na alta hospitalar.

ObjectiveTo translate and cross-culturally adapt the Functional Status Scale for hospitalized children into Brazilian Portuguese.MethodsA methodological study of the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Functional Status Scale was conducted, according to the stages of translation, synthesis of translations, back-translation, synthesis of back-translations, expert committee analysis and pre-test with a sample of the target population. During the evaluation by the committee of experts, semantic, content and item analyses were performed.ResultsThe semantic, idiomatic, cultural and conceptual equivalences between the translated version and the original version were obtained, resulting in the Brazilian version of the Functional Status Scale. After the analysis by the expert committee, there were no problems regarding the cultural or conceptual equivalences because the items were pertinent to the Brazilian culture and few terms were modified. In the pre-test stage, the scale was applied by two evaluators to a sample of 25 children. Clarity and ease in answering the scale items were observed. Good inter-observer reliability was obtained, with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.85 (0.59 - 0.95).ConclusionsThe Functional Status Scale for pediatric use was translated and culturally adapted into Portuguese spoken in Brazil. The translated items were pertinent to the Brazilian culture and evaluated the dimensions proposed by the original instrument. Validation studies of this instrument are suggested to make it feasible for use in different regions of Brazil.
