Infertility is highly correlated with inflammation. We sought to evaluate the independent relationships between each inflammatory marker in women with infertility. Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 1028 infertile patients who were hospitalized at Jining Medical University between January 2016 and December 2022. NLR and PLR were the independent and dependent variables measured at baseline, respectively. Age, body mass index (BMI), and menstrual status were covariates. Based on BMI, the study population was split into two groups: Low-BMI and High-BMI. Results: A stratified analysis revealed that the overweight group had significantly higher levels of WBC, platelet count, lymphocyte count, neutrophil count and NLR. Comparing the overweight group to the normal weight group, the levels were noticeably higher in the overweight group. Significantly positive correlations between NLR and PLR were found in both univariate and multiple regression analyses. Conclusion:There was a significant positive correlation between NLR and PLR in infertility patients. These results will help in the search for biomarkers of infertility and in the development of infertility prediction models.

Objectives The Pediatric Endocrine Society consensus criteria was developed in 2015 to diagnose adolescent PCOS. There are no Indian studies that use these criteria for diagnosis and then compare the clinical characteristics with those of normal controls. The objective of this study was to compare the clinical and biochemical profile in adolescents with and without PCOS and to study the ovarian morphology in adolescents with and without PCOS. Materials and Methods We conducted a prospective case–control study on 60 adolescents who attended the outpatient department/adolescent immunization clinic. Group A included 30 adolescent girls with PCOS diagnosed as per the consensus criteria and Group B included 30 adolescents without PCOS. All participants were clinically evaluated and called empty stomach in the follicular phase for metabolic (Serum TSH, prolactin, FSH, LH, and testosterone) and endocrinal workup (2-hour OGTT, lipid profile) followed by ultrasonic examination. Results In group A, 40% were overweight and 36.7% were obese and in group B, 20% were overweight and 20% were obese. There were no significant differences noted in gonadotropin levels in two groups. Mean testosterone levels were higher in PCO adolescents. The mean ovarian volume and ovarian follicle number were significantly higher in adolescents with PCOS. We found that if ultrasound criteria were added to the diagnosis, there would be about 7% lesser PCOS diagnosis. Conclusion PCOS alters the fat distribution and lipid distribution in the body. These are features that lead to long-term metabolic alterations and life-threatening diseases. All PCOS adolescents thus be screened for these abnormalities and advised lifestyle modifications to keep these parameters under control.

Association between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and polycystic ovary syndrome: A PRISMA-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been suggested to be a potential biomarker for assessing the systemic inflammatory response in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This meta-analysis is aimed at evaluating whether PCOS patients present with a higher NLR and whether obesity, metabolic, and hormonal indices have effects on the states.Methods: We performed a literature search on PubMed, Embase and Web of Science (last update: August 2, 2022). Pooled standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by applying random-effects models. Meta-regression analyses were used to explore the sources of heterogeneity and assess the relationship between NLR and several clinical parameters. Sensitivity analysis and publication bias were also assessed.Results: Thirteen studies involving 826 PCOS patients and 780 healthy controls were eligible for the present meta-analysis. Generally, NLR significantly increased in PCOS women versus healthy women (SMD = 0.81, 95% CI = 0.30-1.33, P = .002). NLR disparity was subsequently investigated in obese and non-obese cohorts. Obese PCOS women exhibited a higher NLR than obese controls (SMD = 0.56, 95% CI = 0.24-0.87, P = .001), and a similar difference was shown between non-obese PCOS and non-obese controls (SMD = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.02-0.71, P = .038). No significant NLR disparity was observed between obese versus non-obese PCOS women (SMD = 0.50, 95% CI = −0.37 to 1.38, P = .259). Meta-regression analysis revealed that NLR was significantly positively associated with fasting blood glucose (P = .006) and total cholesterol levels (P = .021), but not correlated with body mass index and other parameters in PCOS patients. Sensitivity analysis indicated that no individual study significantly affected the overall pooled result, and no publishing bias was observed.Conclusion: PCOS women typically present with an increased NLR.
