Colorectal cancer mortality in Mato Grosso, Brazil: Spatiotemporal trends

Mortality due to colorectal cancer is increasing in Brazil, but an organised approach to screening and prevention is lacking. Considering the importance of this disease, the present study examines recent mortality trends of colorectal cancer mortality in the meso- and microregions in the state of Mato Grosso with the objective of analysing spatiotemporal trends to help guide the allocation of health services related to this type of cancer. Mortality data from the Brazilian national public health system from 1996 to 2015 were analysed investigating spatiotemporal trends using Conditional Autoregressive (CAR) models, a class of Bayesian hierarchical models that rely on Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations. Convergence issues arose with several types of CAR models, but notably not with the linear variant, which models the mortality within each spatial region as a linear function of time. Men and women of all ages displayed higher and increasing mortality rates in the Cuiabá and Rondonópolis microregions. Additional regions of increasing mortality were found for specific age and gender strata. It was concluded that spatiotemporal modelling is a useful tool for the characterisation of diseases, including cancer, which are influenced by several factors and need to be monitored over space and time. The combination of spatial and temporal analyses of mortality shown in this paper unveils important information regarding the small areas dynamics, which may guide discussions, regulation and application of decentralised public health policies.

Região Imediata de Dianópolis - Tocantins: interpretando suas atividades produtivas

O objetivo deste artigo foi analisar o desenvolvimento da Região Imediata de Dianópolis (RID), sudeste do Tocantins. Adotou-se o Quociente Locacional (QL) em relação ao pessoal ocupado em empregos formais nos oito setores econômicos, destacando a agricultura. Para cálculo do QL das atividades produtivas, coletou-se dados secundários na base de dados do Ministério do Trabalho e Emprego, entre 2006 e 2016. E, analisou-se a dinâmica do �?ndice Firjan de Desenvolvimento Municipal (IFDM), relacionando os valores deste com o QL. Observou-se que somente os munic�pios de Almas, Aurora do Tocantins e Novo Alegre possu�am QL significativo para agropecuária, extração vegetal, caça e pesca, em 2006. Por outro lado, 10 (71,4%) dos 14 munic�pios, possu�am QL significativo para Administração Pública em 2006, alterando para 11 (78,6%) em 2016. O desempenho locacional indica o avanço das atividades agropecuárias em 50% dos munic�pios da RID em 2016. O alto valor de QL para o referido setor em 2016 reflete os impactos positivos do projeto de irrigação Manoel Alves, inaugurado em 2008. Individual microentrepreneurs and economic development in the municipalities of São Paulo from 2010 to 2014

Study Aims: to analyze the significant relationship contribution of Individual Microentrepreneurs (MEI) in the socioeconomic development of São Paulo municipalities in the period from 2010 to 2014. Methodology: quantitative approach, of an explanatory nature, with documentary research on data from 637 municipalities in the state of São Paulo. Based on the studies by Silva & Porto Júnior (2006) and Caldarelli & Perdigão (2018), the Gross Domestic Product (Municipal GDP) and the Firjan Municipal Development Index (IFDM) were defined as dependent variables and the total of Existing MEIs per municipality. Main results: there were evidenced positive and significant coefficients of MEI´s in 24 municipalities in São Paulo with low and medium socioeconomic growth, in 2014. Methodological contributions: use of the Quantile Regression technique, more appropriate to estimate independent variables categorized by high variability, as demonstrated in the studies by Hao & Naiman (1949), Santos (2012), Das, Krzywinski & Altman (2019) and Koenker & Hallock (2001). Relevance and originality: the study expands, in part, the understanding of previous studies on the different relationships pointed out between the MEI, the GDP and the IDFM of municipalities in different categories of municipal socioeconomic development. Contributions to management: public managers, from both small and medium or large cities, based on differentiated actions consistent with each context, have a policy of fostering and supporting the creation of micro and small businesses with one of the effective ways to enhance and impact socioeconomic development.
